Kingfisher & Wombat @tkingfisher.com · 19/02/2024Ok, internet, I need some recommendations—READ TO THE END BEFORE REPLYING—for fun *reasonably light* anime that is NOT primarily a romcom. I have greatly enjoyed Spy Family, My Hero Academia, Mashle, Delicious In Dungeon, and found Mr. Villain’s Day Off adorable. 15517011
T.L. Bodine @tlbodine.bsky.social · 19/02/2024Chio's School Road. Hilarious, slice-of-life centered on female friendship and just...random funny off-the-wall stuff happening. 010
Basil They/Them/Fuck Fascists @basilbing.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skill, Dungeon Meshi, Isekai Izakaya, and Restaurant to Another World. They're all cooking animes and they're super chill and fun. Idk if that's what you're looking for. 000

Leia: I'm back on my Gundam kick @ishikawagoemonxiii.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Lupin the Third. A great intro would be the movie Lupin the First and Part 1 dubbed is a great one. Or for a more modern take, Part 4 is rather good. Sailor Moon Crystal (not the 90s anime, sorry for those who enjoy it). A more faithful story to the Manga and iconic. Cells at Work! 100
kittenfish8.bsky.social @kittenfish8.bsky.social · 21/02/2024And, on a related note (which you'll understand better once you've seen it,) teen and I just had a lot of fun imagining Bee and Puppycat visiting the planet of Wombats and meeting Queen Ursula. So, thanks for that joy. 🥰 000
kittenfish8.bsky.social @kittenfish8.bsky.social · 21/02/2024Ok, my teen has strongly recommended Bee and Puppycat for you. It's not an anime, but there is wonderful art, and some delightfully surreal elements that our whole family thinks you'll love. 000
Patio Curmudgeon @juniperfizz.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Gunsmith Cats is very odd but not heavy. It's set in Chicago of all places! 110
FluffYeti @fluffyeti.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I came to rec so many, but nearly all of them are already elsewhere in this thread, so I will add Slime Diaries, which is a slice of life spinoff of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. The main anime is very good, but probably heavier in spots than you'd prefer, and the spinoff is very light. 100
Caytlin (Tamberlane) // ⭐Read My Webcomic!⭐ @caytlin.tamberlanecomic.com · 23/02/2024I second Frieren and also Delicious in Dungeon. I suspect from what I see around the Internet that the latter will probably get heavier eventually? But it hasn't yet, and its a truly wonderful show about figuring out how to eat and prepare monsters in a dungeon. That does not remotely do it justice. 000
Mar Cromwell 🌹 > BLFC @marandart.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Bocchi the Rock is a really fun coming of age girl band anime. The music is good (and original to the show) and the jokes are funny. I am not sure if there's an English dub, though, for background watching... 120
Megan @meganreally.bsky.social · 19/02/2024Saiki K is funny and quite silly but the dialogue is SO FAST (for comedy's sake). Kinda on a similar vibe as 1 Punch Man 200
John Fiala @jcfiala.bsky.social · 20/02/2024My suggestions are "Restaurant From Another World" which is about a small eatery from Japan which is available one day a week from a fantasy world, and "Kimono Friends" which was cheaply animated but has a lot of heart. 010
Grumpy Old Manchild @snakebitcat.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I remember Space Dandy being a lot of goofy fun. 000

Mr.Badger @sunflowerdbadger.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Cromartie high school. Fun in spades. A bit nutty, but there are literally non stakes. 010
K. Vale Nagle @kvalenagle.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Way of the House Husband is on Netflix and is amazing. Ellen Forget @ellenforget.bsky.social · 20/02/2024If you liked Delicious in Dungeon, you'll also probably like Campfire Cooking In Another World With My Absurd Skill. It's also primarily about cooking and the main character has fun familiars. 000
Phil of Canada @philofcanada.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I think you would enjoy Frieren. It's a good mix of lighthearted fun and a deconstruction of heroic fantasy tropes mixed with some musings on immortality. plus an old elf lady gets stuck in mimic chests. 000

The Nerdy Lawyer @nerdylawyer.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I haven't watched much anime in a while, but if you're willing to go for some older stuff: Azumanga Daioh, K-On!, and the first season of Minami-ke are all light, silly, and largely enjoyable (though some bits may have aged poorly; Mr. Kimura from AzuDai certainly has). 000
Miko Squiz @mikosquiz.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Bocchi the Rock is about a pathologically shy and introverted girl becoming a rock star and is v. cute Dorohedoro is, uh, dark and gritty but in the way Tank Girl is dark and gritty, meaning it's silly fluff but people get sploded quite a bit 000

Morgan K. Bell @morgankbell.bsky.social · 19/02/2024It’s been a few years since I watched it but I think One Punch Man would appeal greatly to fans of My Hero Academia and Mashle 020
ScottIJ @scottij.bsky.social · 20/02/2024And if you like food stuff, Wakakozake may be worth checking out. It’s liveactio. not anime but it is on Crunchyroll. Young woman office worker has a secret nightlife eating and drinking at interesting restaurants after work. 110
ScottIJ @scottij.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Oh! Isekai Izakaya! Evil fantasy arch villain defeated and banished to our world, loses powers, has to get job 010
ScottIJ @scottij.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Not sure if it fits your definition of Romcom, but the recent remake of Fruits Basket was just wholesome and lovely and I enjoyed it immensely. Another one that is more relaxing and meditative is Mushi-shi, which always calms me down. 010

Steph @shunter.bsky.social · 20/02/2024The Chinese anime “God Troubles Me” is about the un-godly child of gods who finds herself living with the god of cell phones and god of cats. Surreal, relatable, and hilarious. Short episodes. 000
Philip Scarecrowgmeier. @flipwriter.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I would definitely second (or however many we're up to at this point) any recommendation for The Way of the Househusband and Food Wars. Also, Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits (it has a lot of Ghibli art vibes and a fun premise). 040

Dreamer Dragon (Entering my napalm Era) @dreamerthedragon.bsky.social · 19/02/2024Ones that I am very much enjoying this season that are light (they may start to get heavier later on but so far they are wonderful) and not primarially romatic is Fluffy Paradise, The Wrong Way to use Healing Magic. Tim Ellis, TDSB Ward 2 candidate 🍁 @djdynamic.ca · 19/02/2024Yakitate Japan is about a kid who wants to bake the perfect bread, going on various bread related adventures that get increasingly ridiculous. Dr. NerdLove @doctornerdlove.com · 19/02/2024The Great Pretender is on Netflix and it’s a fun series of heists and cons that’s somewhat reminiscent of Leverage as the main character wants to be the greatest con artist in Japan and ends up fleecing horrible people around the world 0101
N. K. Jemisin @nkjemisin.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Food Wars. Batshit and hilarious, and I've been rewatching it this week while I sign a million tip-ins. Full of fanservice because it treats "foodgasms" like actual orgasms, but it's all-in on who gets flashed -- all genders, all ages. No romance so far. 4340

Joel Berger @teknomantik.old-home.net · 19/02/2024I'm not sure if this is *too* light, but I'll throw Nichijou out there. It's a little absurd but probably still makes good background watching. 010

Rinzy 🔞 @rinzy.art · 20/02/2024Shangri-La Frontier has been a lot of fun so far! It's another VR MMO anime, but doesn't involve any "We're trapped in the game!" stuff. Basic premise is that it's about a guy who's used to playing bad/buggy games actually trying out a good, popular MMO. 010
XelEsparza @xelesparza.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Tiny Little Life in the Woods was a favorite of mine from my fiancé's Anime FMK days. I also liked Chio's School Road. If you're in the mood for something like eating a whole bag of potato chips in one sitting, try Killing Bites. 000

R @arrkonthelibrarian.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I really like kiyo in Kyoto: from the Maiko house but it’s not dubbed. It’s about two friends who want to be geisha, one drops out and becomes the cook/caretaker at the apprentice house and each episode focuses on a dish she cooks! 020
A Jelly Squishes Slowly By @ubiquisquish.bsky.social · 19/02/2024Shirakuma Café is a slice of life anime about a polar bear who has a fancy coffee café: many hijinks, puns, work-adverse panda, alpaca/llama rivalry. Kimichi Tsuzuku @kimichitsuzuku.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I don’t see anyone else recommending it, but the boringly named “The Great Cleric” isekai is light, almost a workplace comedy. Mummified (but spooky) Tony @mummifiedtony.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Way of the House Husband is light 000
Fanboy Chris @fanboychris.bsky.social · 19/02/2024Sleepy Princess is such a funny and underrated anime. 010
Cecilia @gaiacecilia.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I quite liked Assassination Classroom, which has the plus of being complete, although the premise is pretty dark, its mostly fairly light-hearted, although the ending does emotional damage. Castlevania, as far as I've watched at least, is hilarious although also with a dark premise. 000
André @andrecomics.bsky.social · 20/02/2024More Tubi stuff- Fancy Lala is light & fun magical girl stuff, Space Dandy is super silly (he's a dandy! André @andrecomics.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Stuff I rec on Tubi- Hunter X Hunetr (gets kinda heavy/violent tho), Ranma 1/2, Saiki K (very dumb/silly), lots of Lupin III specials & shows, Bakuman (Jump show about making comics), Yashahime (InuYasha's daughter and nieces), CardCaptor Sakura is on there too. Saidi Enfida @sultansaidi.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Frieren is a great exploration of fantasy and especially what happens after the big evil got destroyed and how you connect and care about people even after they are gone 000
Garlax, The Weasel King @garlaxweaselking.bsky.social · 19/02/2024The only thing I can think of is “I’ve been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level” (Which is also one of the very few anime I’ve watched a season.) 060

Zachary Dillon @zacharydillon.substack.com · 20/02/2024I’m astonished to not see “Thermae Romae Novae” mentioned. Ancient Roman bathhouse architect unwittingly zaps through time and space, stealing ideas from modern Japanese bathing equipment and comforts. And the creator appears at the end of each ep, touring Japanese baths! 000
Richard Roberts @inscrutablemachine.bsky.social · 20/02/2024So I’m A Spider, So What? A teenage girl reincarnated as a spider monster in a video game rules-whoring shamelessly to become a god just so people will leave her the fuck alone and she can go back to being a shut-in… sound like a list of things you like. 010
Oseike @oseike.bsky.social · 20/02/2024If you liked Spy x Family, you'll probably like Buddy Daddies. Similar premise, a bit less whacky 000
Sayyadina (sie/hir) @sayyadina.northsky.social · 20/02/2024Way of the Househusband on Netflix. Slice-of-life show about a retired yakuza and his salarywoman wife. It's adorable! Also Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (it has romance elements, but they aren't the primary focus). 000
Jimmie Myers @jimmiemyers.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I enjoyed A Place Further Than the Universe quite a bit! It’s a cute, fairly grounded story about 3 high school friends who end up on a trip to Antarctica. 000
Örjan @cunobaros.bsky.social · 19/02/2024"Frieren - Beyond journey's end" is a sweet fantasy story about an elf who outlived most of her successful and retired adventuring party (the humans aged out). But it's only subbed. Seconding "Keep your hands off Eizouken!" 240
gremlingirlsmell @gremlingirlsmell.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is really good, if you want something chill. It's fantasy following the journey of an Elf after the Big Evil has already been defeated. Bocchi The Rock! is amazing funny slice of life about a girl with social anxiety in a rockband with gay undertones (no romance tho!) 000
Max Kaehn @mithriltabby.bsky.social · 19/02/2024Things from Crunchyroll: "Campfire Cooking in Another World With My Absurd Skill" is pleasantly silly. "I've Been Killing Slimes For 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level" is a fine demonstration of how a game master can handle high-level characters, plus an amazingly large witch hat. 130
Steve Burnett @steveburnett.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I can't not mention R.O.D. (Read Or Die), although it's been around for a long time and you're likely familiar with it. Might not be reasonably light depending on specifics, but at least it's definitely not a romcom! 010
Beth B @bethb.bsky.social · 20/02/2024We are currently watching The Vampire Dies Quickly. It’s fun and I like the music 000
CT3LA @ct3la.bsky.social · 19/02/2024First two seasons of Scissor Seven seem like the kind of tone you're looking for, for the following two seasons it kind of loses all pacing 010
Martian Manhaunter 👻🔞 @dorkonaut.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Flying Witch is good. It’s about a girl in the process of becoming a witch and all the hijinks that ensue. It’s pretty short, though (12? episodes). There’s also Laid Back Camp, which is about a camping group and, well, camping. That one is ongoing, from the looks of it. 000
Emily @cat-appreciator.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I enjoyed non non biyori, which is a slice-of-life about school kids in rural Japan. The scenery is gorgeous. 120
Rook @rookorik.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Mushi-shi, Kill-la-kill, Chainsaw Man, Zom 100, Heaven Official's Blessing, Cowboy Bebop...I kinda wanna say Bastard!!, too... 010
Lance @lancelotl.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Kakegurui is amazing. Very fun. Utterly unhinged at some points but in a good way. High stakes without being emotionally heavy. 000
L.N. @furtech.bsky.social · 24/02/2024For something light and different, consider, "Yakitate!!" It's an anime about making bread; the hero's dream is to create a bread Japan can all its own. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakitat... You can find it on a lot of services that have "premium" services (eg, Crunchyroll). 010
Alex "I think you'll find it did not blow" P 🇨🇦 @alexmegami.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Also the books are romances but because of Chinese censorship laws the donghua almost certainly won't be outside of hinting - Heaven Official's Blessing has some dark moments and will eventually have some *really* heavy stuff if it keeps getting made, but the current two seasons are (cont) 100
Alex "I think you'll find it did not blow" P 🇨🇦 @alexmegami.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto/Sakamoto Desu Ga? It's only 13 episodes afaik but it's entirely about a dude who is so good at everything it's unreasonable and the bullies/delinquents at his school who are ultimately won over by him. 000
T(he Thing)J(ohn Carpenter’s, that is) Tomaso @cyan220.bsky.social · 20/02/2024I really enjoyed the live action one piece on Netflix. I’m sure the actual anime is better, but seems like a massive undertaking as opposed to one season 000
Stroctoperry @stroctoperry.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Bananya might be *unreasonably light* but I'm going to suggest it anyway 010
Kay @fridgebrilliance.bsky.social · 19/02/2024Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki Kun: a bunch of highschoolers with no clue about romance end up producing a highly popular shoujo manga. It’s incredibly funny and doesn’t need much in the way of attention to plot, because it’s wall to wall antics and subverted cliches 030
Felgraf @felgraf.bsky.social · 20/02/2024Azumanga Dioh! I suspect you, like many other ADHD folks out there (including myself), will particularly relate to a few of the characters. 000
Prof. Nycteris, Spooky @nycteris.bsky.social · 19/02/2024I really liked A.I.C.O (on Netflix) but it’s like… cloning and some body horror. So not a rom com. 🤔 I watched the whole thing twice already because it’s only a few episodes. Oh! Also Eden (also Netflix) was good - I could be failing at “light”, but these aren’t super heavy? 110
