People are getting upset about this, the headline isn't helping, but the actual story involves a much less controversial use of AI (the translation was done by humans!) - OCR of difficult handwriting! (I suspected as much because Montreal, of all places, has a thriving secular Yiddish culture too)

even if you take 100% at face value that no one's safeword is being disregarded and that everyone going there knows exactly what is going to happen (a big if), that is clearly a "yes, I am more likely to view you as qualified and hire you if you have sex with me" from an attendee's own mouth.

the MISHNAH is spiritually israeli. and maybe the yerushalmi. but the bavli, the talmud that people mean when they say talmud without any other specifiers, is profoundly spiritually diasporic

This is not submitting to God's will and being sent on a futile mission of prophecy. This is ordering God to endorse the aggression the speaker has already decided on.

if you take the other side of any of those arguments you are implicitly accepting that there is a real debate here. there is not. the world's richest man let food grain aid rot on shelves for basically no reason that is even remotely defensible.

remember: it saved no net money, social services US citizens are getting cut, and left the US in a weaker place geopolitically. none of the debates about fiscal responsibility, obligation to US citizens first, or 'hard choices' actually apply. they're all bullshit. killed people for nothing at all.

You want an example of focusing on culture war bullshit instead of warfighting, THIS is it. Hegseth isn't worried about the fact that he's set US policy goals in the Gulf back literal decades, no, he's too busy monitoring soldiers' testosterone levels and reveling in what slurs he gets to use.

the brand safety panopticon has come to twitch
Streamers, wary of both AI and YouTube’s infuriatingly un-transparent hall of mirrors, are not enthused about this new development.

“Ohhh so that’s why ad revenue dropped,” longtime streamer JP "itmeJP" McDaniel said on Twitter.

“I’m genuinely worried that the sheer fact that I’m a lesbian will cause the AI to remove ads,” said Vtuber LuminusRed. “In the past I’ve tested it and confirmed that I get less ad money if I had queer-related tags on my stream like ‘lesbian,’ so I am worried this dumb AI monitoring will mean I no longer get money from ads on Twitch.”

It's not new, but literally every shadow docket hearing, the Supreme Court is reinforcing its illegitimacy. It is not a court. It is not doing the work of a court. In the interest of the rule of law, we need to ultimately abide by its rulings, but there is no future without significant court reform

A bunch of doodles of potential patch ideas done in colorful markers. Text on the patches reads (from left to right, top down): "transcend", "it's never too late. we are eternal", "T4T", a small note next to a star saying "trans colors", "hungry? eat the rich", "missing?", "miau?" & "ambiguously gay vampire".

I generally appreciate this thread and its ideas, but I take real issue with this particular post's ending, because it's not as though bad history hasn't done real harm, either. Bad engineering gets people killed, generally by accident. Bad history has been and still is used to justify murder.

In French class in high school we listened to Joe Dassin's "Le Petit Pain au Chocolat," and it's been a lurking earworm ever since. One wonderful thing about that song for me is that it has a great example of how idioms both can and can't be translated.
