Chicagoland friends, I have a favor to ask. I have a pro bono client, a Black woman, who is currently facing charges for allegedly pointing a gun at her abusive ex - who admitted to raping her. I would love if there could be a show of support for her at her next few court dates.

Every single company is run like an investment whose only responsibility is short term "line go up". A sock factory will sell the knitting machines to bump the YOY numbers and then act surprised when they can't make any socks to sell twelve weeks later.

And this passage in her powerful essay touches on something I was talking about earlier here: the constant insistence that victims and not perpetrators work hard at stopping rape, always with an absence of recognition we need the collective solution that is social change.
Many people think of privilege and entitlement in positive terms, such as discrete additive benefits, but they are primarily defined by something else: the elimination or reduction of obstacles and costs that others incur. Is the Red Zone an entitlement?

Just before my daughters were about to set off for college, we got emails from their high school offering a self-defense class for new graduates, $100 a person. Only girls and their families got the emails. The message seemed clear enough: before sending your daughters off to college, make sure they can fight off aggressors. My knee-jerk instinct was to ask: who do girls have to defend themselves against? Mainly boys like the ones they grew up with. Boys were not also being offered a class, at a rate of $100 per person, but by the logic of the offer, they were the ones who might be accidentally or purposefully assaulting someone. All worry instead tends to focus, as preparation, on the possibility of false allegations, despite their rarity.

I understood why a self-defense class made sense and appreciated the effort. However, the class, as well-intended as it was, made me angry. The offering was yet another example of an institutional default: expecting young women to privatize the cost of preventing their assaults instead of preparing men, holding them accountable, or, in this case, suggesting they incur an actual financial price to supplement their education, socialization, and college preparation.

When my mom passed in 2019, one of the things I found in my old closet was a folder of paperwork from freshman orientation at Michigan, 1988, including a pamphlet from the Sexual Assault Preventation and Awareness Center. 30+ years later and the only thing they'd have to change on it is the date.

Just like an abusive husband smashing up his wife's possessions, the tech industry likes to act as if it's breaking things at random, as a chaotic byproduct of raw innovation, when it fact it's very clearly and systematically targeting human rights, worker protections and social safety networks.

There are lots of ways to answer this and one of them is that studying history makes you a better citizen and our public universities have an obligation to produce good citizens. History education is essential to a republican model of government. Engineering is not.

Spent the day at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo with family. Great time all around and I fed this giraffe. The new giraffe center is open now so the giraffes have a whole new area to explore - it's huge.
A different view of a giraffe. It is extremely close up and is just its open mouth and tongue as it ate leaves off the branch I was feeding it. The zoo sells leaves and lettuce to feed the giraffes, it was a lot of fun.The giraffe I was feeding, it stripped the leaves off the branch in one swift move, I didn't expect that. Well done, Giraffe. It had obviously done this many times before and knew exactly how to strip the leaves in seconds and move onto the next person offering food (legit zoo sold food).Tons of fun. Lovely zoo.
