donmercutio.bsky.social @donmercutio.bsky.social · 08/10/2025As we only get a degree so as to earn more. Not for the expansion of knowledge, of the mind for self and society's benefit. Not to keep culture and tradition alive. No, for money. As all the value that matters is monetary 010
Phil Jones' body double @philsbodydouble.bsky.social · 08/10/2025Global Britian doesn't need people with an English degree! 14012
Trish Anderton @trishanderton.bsky.social · 08/10/2025Degrees like that teach you critical thinking, which means you’ll never vote for those a-holes again 040

Kerry Fisher @vodkakit.bsky.social · 08/10/2025'Poverty of your own mind'. Is that the best you can do? Come on, the English language has a plethora of fine insults. 000
Old Hobbit🐸 @oldhobbit.bsky.social · 08/10/2025Stick a St George's flag on it and all will be fine! Make English Great Again! 010
Saaaaaaaaaaaaaam @samsamsamsamsam.bsky.social · 08/10/2025The irony is that if she had an English degree, Badenoch might be better able to figure out when she's being quoted out of context 020
Soluble @solpadeine.bsky.social · 08/10/2025I'd have thought a qualification in knowing more about English would be invaluable in these un-British times. 020
charliegorgon.bsky.social @charliegorgon.bsky.social · 08/10/2025As a chemistry graduate, I find Badenoch's statement utterly moronic. The country needs people with a wide range of skills and educational backgrounds. If not it would be a poorer and less productive place. And how many of her senior colleagues are humanities grads? Do they agree with her? 010
Caffeine 🇺🇦 @caffeineninja.bsky.social · 08/10/2025I think people call it that because employers don’t really value it and it’s harder to get a job with an English degree. In our personal lives it’s valuable. But most people value a career more. 000
Verity @becausepithy.bsky.social · 08/10/2025Fascinating - I use skills developed during my degree in English Language and Literature in work every day. I’m an accountant, I both write and critically analyse other other people’s written reports (on financial information). Doesn’t the workforce need great English and Maths skills? 051
Josh @joshmoorc.bsky.social · 08/10/2025Is this part of the Trump playbook of eroding the value of education? Presumably because their increasingly far right ideology can be more easily sold to the undereducated? 010
rob @robinprague.bsky.social · 08/10/2025I teach advanced TESOL .. showed my C1/C2 students this claim of 'rip-off degree' .. everyone single one of them shocked and appalled. Beyond crass. 010

Doug HS 😶🌫️ @doug-hss.bsky.social · 08/10/2025Until student loan repayments receive a better and fairer rate of interest, all degrees could be classified a rip off. 030
Phil Jackman @philjackman.bsky.social · 08/10/2025The performing arts is something we actually do well in. 030
Alastair #FBPE 🇪🇺🇵🇸 🇺🇦🇨🇦 @alastairh4h.bsky.social · 08/10/2025Grammar was not taught at all for nigh on 30 years until 1988. Guess which cohorts are now in guvernmint (sic). 100
Free Speech For Peace @freespeechforpeace.bsky.social · 08/10/2025The Tories, Labour and Reform are all about how much they can take from us - the greedy millionaires will never be sated. Choose The Green Party who are working to give you more - starting with hope! 030
Graeme Worsfold @graemeworsfold.bsky.social · 08/10/2025The performing arts sector is (roughly) delivering £10-20bn value to the UK economy each year. Cool. Cool. 010
RuelFox @ruelfox.bsky.social · 08/10/2025They know the price of everything and the value of nothing. Or something like that which my old used to say. She’d have quickly labelled them, quite accurately, a as “bunch of posh thick cunts.” Bless her heart. 100
Paul Park @pauljunhyuk.bsky.social · 08/10/2025Reminds me of Alan Bennett’s point that reading fiction encourages empathy because it’s the only medium that shows you the inside of someone else’s head (even if it’s mostly a version of the author). 030
Gavin Knight @gavinknight1.bsky.social · 08/10/2025There is a decline in people taking English A level and studying it at uni since Gove made English GCSE a tickbox nightmare. Creative industry bodies tend towards CreaTech like gaming, immersive AI rather than writing and storytelling, the most powerful art that has survived for thousands of years…. 020
Kirsten Elliott @kirstenelliott.bsky.social · 08/10/2025I'm still reeling from that comment. My OH has an MA and PhD in English and an MA in fine art. All dismissed as 'rip off degrees', I assume. 020
