Yes, I think you might be right. In Liverpool I heard quite a lot of talk of “this new Government“ as though nobody in the room had anything to do with the one elected in 2024 (or frankly could even remember who they were).

In short, Burnham may have pulled off that magic trick that, hitherto, only Tories have managed: to establish himself as the "Change Candidate" despite being the sitting PM.

“It's a bold strategy. It forces opponents to make a similarly big offer or they look irrelevant. An offer which I don't think they have the ideological hinterland or intellectual capacity to make. They will end up getting into massive trouble, if they try to match Burnham's policy size and scope.”

That's a key point. Debate around the pound as a key symbol of identity and sovereignty has not caught up with a reality for most people below the age of 60 where most payments are now cashless. You can go from the UK to every EU state and not use physical currency once in most transactions

Not sure how the triple lock change will ultimately play politically. But trapping the Tories and Reform into defending a policy literally none of them support in private is potentially a neat move.

Great that Burnham is looking at options to recast Britain’s relationship with the EU and undo the damage of Brexit. But he will surely soon find that there is only one option that works for Britain politically, economically and strategically.

And recall: “one piece of evidence of failure [of Brexit] would be if we are still debating this in five- or six-years’ time in the same way. I think [if] it is to succeed it needs to settle in the British polity.” David Frost (2022). Pretty clear we now have that evidence of failure.

Important development in clearly stating Brexit was harmful & reset isn't a solution. But (unlike ER commission) no obvious process for how "we can find consensus". And on what? The options (again)? Or which to pursue? Still, definitely pitchrolling for something beyond 'make Brexit work'.
