Whilst nobody can condone the violence and arson, the fact that French, Belgian and Libyan kids are protesting that poor investment in schools and a lack of teachers is undermining their education is something to be congratulated. Young people are sick of having their futures short changed.

The rush to speculate that asylum seekers are responsible for every crime in the news is a sort of opportunistic informational terrorism. Until it’s disproved it stokes fear and hatred. When it is disproved there are no adverse consequences and they know that they only have to be lucky once.

Funny thing I recall the debate back when it was linked to inflation not earnings which was seen as unfair and at the time I thought "link to inflation seems a fair basis for a state benefit" and now that earnings rarely keep track with inflation of course the distinction has switched the other way.
