We are about to hear a concerted effort from the Brexit right about how rejoining the EU is impossible and how the Europeans don't want us back. It's all rubbish. European politicians are overwhelmingly in support of much closer ties with the UK including full membership.

Stephen Bush on the Burnham speech: shorter.me/hZsjM
There was, however, a striking omission. He said nothing at all about how the
government is going to navigate its biggest immediate challenge, the Budget in
October and the comprehensive spending review next year. Burnham has
concluded that while the country wants change, he can't deviate from the
promises and manifesto he inherited from Keir Starmer this side of an election.
The logic of his speech is twofold: first, the next election will not take place until
2029. And second, that until then he will remain bound not only by the real fiscal
constraints the country is operating under, but the ones Labour has imposed on
itself. Whether his programme and popularity can survive that remains to be
seen.

Burnham says rejoining EU among options for Britain: ‘We could go all the way’ - Politics.co.uk

Asked whether he wanted the UK to rejoin the EU, the prime minister said: “I want to look at the options, and […]

PR won't keep Reform out. At today's polls it would give them more seats, not fewer. What it does is stop anyone, Reform included, taking power on 30% of the vote. That's the argument Burnham should make.

On "fairness" in the immigration system: are the huge fees and surcharge costs fair? No. Is the minimum income for spouse visas fair? No. Is the fact that these costs increased massively in the last decade fair? No. Yet when we hear about fairness from the government, they never mean these.

This mindset is the least we deserve from a leader. Of course it has to be turned into action. But this kind of ambition and love for the country, this kind of personal but positive vision is what takes people with you. How feeble-minded Farage and Badenoch seem. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Photo of Burnham waving to the audience in front of HOPE AGAIN backdrop Burnham was not going to die wondering. He knew he might be delivering one of the longest suicide notes in history, but he did it anyway. Because he couldn't not do it. Better to go down remaining true to his principles than being slowly airbrushed out of history like the previous six prime ministers. Failures all. Andy was prepared to burn through all his political capital right there in Liverpool, right then. Not just for his own legacy but for a country he wanted to rebuild. It was the only way he could look himself in the mirror.
