Things need to be more sophisticated than simply a tax. State clearly where the money goes and ringfence it for only that. Make it transparent they are contributing to social care etc. Then they have no excuses for not contributing, they are doing visible good and if they leave then good riddance.

The guy who’s got 15 years for that incident with the ULEZ camera, needs putting away but also needs help. In some ways he’s a casualty of this war that’s happening in our brain spaces. A lot more are being led to just cause civil disorder, the screaming sheep threatening the RNLI are an eg.

Watching the Grand Tour, the new presenters are all capable and likeable but it’s just more of the same but without the edge that Clarkson scripts had. It feels like those 80s extended 12” mixes of great pop songs that did nothing for the song. Definitely a niche programme now,

#poetry Birmingham and ageing
Old and New
I was in Birmingham again,
City of grey and heavy rain.
I studied here when it was greyer,
Etched in graffiti, not in prayer,
Painted by the local gangs
Whose mothers raised them on hunger pangs,

Part of the millions left to rot
In a world that Thatcher had forgot.

The scent of weed and riot air
Still hung in Mosley, thick and bare,
And Hnadaworth, suburb of deep dub,
Where students lived without a tub.
In Cape Hill, women asked the time;
I answered, missing every sign,
Until I saw their trade unfold
And felt naive, though young and bold.

The dreadlocks gathered all around,
A brand-new culture underground,
A fresh pulse turning in the grain,
Still rough beneath the polished stain.

Now a shiny station stands complete,
Reflecting movement at its feet,
Its bright skin shining in the sun
Like a tin foil factory undone.
Signs display numbers, but no sense,
A maze of gates, a glass fence;
I tap right through to platform-bound,
But had to exit and walk around.

No one can fathom mysteries
In labyrinthine hubs like these,
Except to see they mirror best
The wilder city's shifting chest.
Back in the day, the old town felt
Held fast within a rigid belt,
With every line and border clear,
So everyone knew their place around here.

Now all is jumble, noise, and mess,
                Cranes on the skyward wilderness.

For age comes quietly to us all,
And order crumbles as we fall.
In youth we think our paths are set,
With structure we will soon forget,
The newness doesn't fit the grid
Or anything we learned as kids.

Now Birmingham’s a melting pot
Of glass and steel and times forgot.
A different mix of people and things
Yet the sameness, like a bell rings.
The city’s changed its skin and mind,

But,

    Actually,

Maybe the change was only mine.

TBF those extra channels are a product of the multichannel era of 20 years ago. Plus we no longer are told what public service media should be in the approaching era of hyper personalised, generated on the fly, media. We need a cultural touchstone but the century old BBC model most likely isn’t it.

Just to remind you I have my first collection of #poetry is available to buy via Amazon. amzn.eu/d/0bqkC24D yes the art is by me. It’s really really started to capture my voice and the poems cover joy, anguish, humour and sadness as well as death, recovery, Barnsley and Weybridge.
Ten in the morning, on an NHS ward, the poet's heart stopped. Someone on a twelve-hour shift knew what to do with her hands. Nobody asked what he was worth first.
Not Yet is a first collection, written over 15 years, in hospitals, on trains, & in the ordinary hours when something insisted on being written down & wouldn't take a polite no. These are poems built from scenes rather than arguments: coffee shops, supermarkets, chip shops, train platforms, hospital corridors, Barnsley backyards & Weybridge drives.
It begins in the town that made him. Defoe called Barnsley black for its soot; it stands now in glass, built over the capped shafts of the pits that paid for it. From there the book moves through a Yorkshire childhood, a Triang bike, a father who never said much to your face but never stopped bragging about you in the working men's club, a system of affection that took forty years to decode. Then out to the clipped lawns & idling engines of the commuter belt, the interview room, the supermarket aisle & finally back to the ward.
The range is wide and not always solemn. There are sonnets, free verse & poems in broad Yorkshire. There is a mock-scholarly critical edition of Kubla Khan set in a Tesco Express. There is a long poem about the NHS that doesn't argue its case so much as leave it on your doorstep & ring the bell. There is a red-&-white cat who knew what was coming a week before he went, and had the good manners not to mention it.
At the centre is death, not as metaphor, which is how poetry usually prefers it, safely on a leash, but as something witnessed, endured & returned from.
Not Yet is for anyone who has sat in a waiting room and not known how it ends. For anyone who has lost a parent and found themselves promoted, without interview, to a different place in the world. For anyone who has wondered what it actually means to still be here, and would quite like the answer before closing time.
Direct, dry, occasionally furious, and unwilling to look away.Ten in the morning, on an NHS ward, the poet's heart stopped. Someone on a twelve-hour shift knew what to do with her hands. Nobody asked what he was worth first.
