A naked, gold-covered Trump statue has been unveiled inside the European Parliament in Strasbourg. It’s called “Orange Plague,” also known as “King of Injustice,” and shows him sitting on another man’s shoulders holding an enormous golf club. Covered in reportedly 23-karat gold, of course.

Voters loathed the Tory party when they booted them out in 2024.They really needed to shake off their disgrace with humility and better ideas. They haven’t. They’ve doubled down. More Brexit, more austerity, more anti-immigration ugliness, more tedious arrogance… and no good reason to vote for them.
Party seems to have learnt nothing from 2024 defeat
John Oxley

The Conservative Party is keen to show it is now ready to return to government, two and a half years after a
historic defeat.Their self-soothing explanation posits that defeat came from not being able to do what they wanted

No such pivot is happening at the current conference. The Tories have come to Birmingham calling for a return to orthodoxy, with similar lines about cutting benefits and regulation. Even so, they seem trapped by the same contradictions
- pledging to cut benefits, but not the winter fuel payments and triple lock on pensions that go to their voters.
There is no "hug-a-hoodie" moment in Birmingham. The Conservative Party is not indicating that it has changed or seeking to broaden its appeal. It is doing the opposite: it is a party returning to its core, restating all the old ideas voters have rejected but louder.

I cannot tell you how many times in the last year I have said to folks here: Politics changes very fast nowadays; do not pledge devotion from party to party easily; leave yourself the intellectual and emotional space to assess things in the round much closer to an election, armed with more data.

@sturdyalex.bsky.social
As you know I have huge reservations about moving expectations of saintliness on to anyone. It is very much the left's MO. We set ourselves up for disappointment, our politicians for failure, then become furious when they fail. The experience with Tsipras in Greece was instructive.

I love the Greens and really like Zack, but I need to see a bit more detail and sustained success before going all-in. I see an awful lot of enthusiasm for him and sometimes it feels a bit brittle and manic. I worry that inflated expectations set politicians up to fail and voters to be disappointed.

I am fully supportive. I think you may be on to something. My fear is that a lot of people have simply transferred their impossible expectations to someone new and the moment Zack takes a position on which they disagree, which is bound to happen, he will become another never-could. Let's see.

As you know, I'm a fan of Zack - he's been on QR twice. But I am worried that a lot of people are transferring extremely unrealistic expectations to yet another politician they want to hail as a saviour - based on a very short period - and, in doing that, setting up yet another good person to fail.

I am genuinely just trying to interrogate the frame of mind. Critical voters are great - a crucial part of democracy. But to me "critical" includes rationality. I worry that social media encourages people to take extreme emotional postures as a way of absenting themselves rather than engaging. 2/

Like there is a race for who will throw up their hands highest and quickest. That is a horrible strategy for wellbeing. It is to resign oneself to anguish for the next X years. And the only thing with which I can explain such an extreme reaction is the dashing of pretty inflated expectations. 3/

Now, of course, one can choose individual totally unpalatable policies - I would accept and agree with most - and say "I don't think that was unreasonable to expect Y" but an inability to find *anything* that has improved, results in a really lopsided and nihilistic view. 4/

And I wonder if this cycle then becomes BOTH the result AND the source of the politics we see. If progressive or left-leaning voters make ourselves, essentially, impossible to please and very easy to lose forever, doesn't that make it rational for parties to compete for right wing votes? 6/6

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights. As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data. These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.

The Law Society

In short, if Britain were to leave the ECHR, it would not be
'taking back control. It would be surrendering influence over the rules and institutions that help keep us safe.
The debate about the ECHR is too often conducted as though it were a choice between national sovereignty and international law. That is a false choice.
The Convention advances British interests because it reflects British values: liberty under law, democratic government and the accountability of power.
Walking away would not make Britain freer. It would make Britain weaker.
