DJW 🎨 🔞 @djwaglmuffin.bsky.social · 07/07/2024Well...better invest in some encyclopedias. (me, I mean) 000
PigeonFish @thepigeonfish.bsky.social · 11/12/2024I don't think it's all that dire. Reminds me of kids when I was in college using Wikipedia as an internet source. We all learned eventually that it was to be taken with a grain of salt. I think these kids will learn the same about ChatGPT. 130
skinnyraf.bsky.social @skinnyraf.bsky.social · 10/12/2024My son has just had a painful lesson not to trust chat GPT: he asked it about locations of a few items in Elden Ring. All answers were wrong. 226413
Halcyon Ember @halcyonember.bsky.social · 07/07/2024I for one welcome our new AI overlords, I have been informed they are friendly and helpful and their tips on glueing cheese to pizzas have been invaluable. 020
An Enormous "F**K YOU!" Dragon @dragonlizardjareth.bsky.social · 10/12/2024Time to teach kids to "check and cite your sources" again. Even wiki pages can do that. 021
Adam. Pottery Beard. @thatbeardoadam.bsky.social · 07/07/2024The nature of AI right now is that it comes up with BS, but not the same BS each time. I would have queried the same question about Greek multiple times to get wildly different answers each time, then tell the kid to listen to their teachers. 010
Sarah Morgan @sarahanitamorgan.bsky.social · 10/12/2024Worse yet, now actual Google offers AI at the top too. Last weekend the BF and I were getting Xmas trees and google told him a 7' tree would need 150 lights. (It's more like 800.) What's scary is when you get AI results that you DON'T have 45 years of experience to know are nonsense. 180
caveglow.bsky.social @caveglow.bsky.social · 10/12/2024As a 20 year old who was in college when AI started to take off, we also think those people are idiots, they’re the minority not the majority 090
Ember, Rotten or King 🇵🇸 @therottenking.bsky.social · 11/12/2024Hopefully that kid will eventually have it tell him something he knows can't possibly be true, or at least enough conflicting answers to the same thing that something clicks in his mind 010
Joe @twitskeptic.sirvin.com · 06/07/2024This seems like a missed teaching opportunity. If the student types something into a LLM and it comes up with bullshit, then show the student why it's BS and how to verify the information that they find online. This, of course, applies to all search results, not just AI generated answers. 3230
Sue Beesley @suebeesley.bsky.social · 10/12/2024AI excels at delivery plausible-sounding content in grammatically perfect sentences. And people are conditioned to believe that if someone can write that well, they must be right... 120
Wilford Brimless @wool-gathering.com · 11/12/2024you just ask chatgpt to tell it something about the individual student by name and tell them “well it must be true” by their own standards. 1170
The_Turtle_Moves @theturtlemoves.bsky.social · 07/07/2024And schools are getting a weird amount of support to 'incorporate AI' into teaching... As a resource for teachers and a resource for students, not training in how to avoid its larger liabilities. 1605
UnDrewsual @undrewsual.bsky.social · 07/07/2024And this is why I’ve said for a long time that just saying “do your own research” is not enough. Kids need to be taught HOW to do their own research. As in, how to verify sources, cross-reference material, etc. 071
Beach Dude @beach-dude.bsky.social · 10/12/2024There are a whole bunch of people on Reddit believe that doing psychotherapy over ChatGPT is far better than doing it with a human. But I’m hearing things like expense, accuracy, being the perfect listener as opposed to being a human being. It’s really scary. 270
Nairno @audiodrum.bsky.social · 07/07/2024This is just the current version of “I’ll just check Wikipedia”. It’s not grim, it’s just the first step of students finding out that there is no quick way to a result without proper research. What’s grim is the suggestion here that there is nothing we can do. 020
Zachary Flower @flower.codes · 10/12/2024I spent an entire week on prompt injection and inducing hallucinations in LLMs with my students because of this exact concern. Part of my job is to teach about the pros and cons of the tools that are available to them, so I try to incorporate AI literacy into the curriculum as much as possible. 3844
Dragon Nexus @dragonnexus.bsky.social · 07/07/2024It is just insane that we invented the smart phoine which can tap into the infinite knowledge of the human race. And that wasn't enough because it didn't make people enough money. So we invented something to ruin the infinite knowledge device. And that doesn't make money either. 051
Goon Docks @goondocks.online · 07/07/2024Well, I would hope that kids are also taught about sources. And how to identify authoritative facts. "Look it up" has been bad advice since the internet. They can get BS from a search, too. 130
Jennifer X. Pumpkins 🎃 @jenyetagain.bsky.social · 06/07/2024I grouse sometimes about the extent to which smart phones turned the internet into an external hard drive for my brain. For a decade the way I retain facts changed because I could search the world's knowledge instantly at any time. Losing that was scary, replacing it with misinformation is crazy. 0948
Stephen Hyams @stephenhyams.bsky.social · 10/12/2024Sometimes all it takes is typing something like, “I’m not sure that’s accurate” and chatgpt will find new “facts” and apologize for being incorrect…while still being incorrect. These are wild times indeed. 020
