Can Machines Feel?
The question sounds naive. It is not. The traditional answer, that machines cannot feel because they lack the biological substrate of emotion, rests on assumptions that neuroscience has increasingly undermined. Emotions, as we now understand them, are not produced by some magical property of neurons. They are computational processes: patterns of information processing that produce certain functional states and certain behavioral outputs. If a system can produce the same functional states by different means, there is no a priori reason to deny that those states are emotions.
