This seems like an appropriate time to remind people of the 1990 book, Fraternity Gang Rape, by the anthropologist Peggy Reeves Sanday, who was my favorite professor in college and unfortunately passed away last year.

All the while these recruiters reveling in the bullsh*t "iced coffee" discourse, they also put 70 year-old professional expectations onto workers that they have no intention of ever reciprocating.

A man replied to this saying in earnest that women need to get organized and fight for our rights and men will follow. We did that. We do that. We mobilized the largest single day protest in global history on every continent and yet I have fewer rights than my mom did at my age.

My sculpt of Kali Ma in a fighting pose, screaming in rage. The figure is primarily still in all dark colors due to the contrast paints.

The way I typically judge both ideologies and technologies is by what they do. Not what people say they do. What actual consequences they have for people. If they actually make things better, then they can be viewed as good/beneficial. But if all they do is harm, no future promises are worth it.

"The purpose of a system is what it does," was coined by Stafford Beer in 1979. The bottom line is, it doesn't matter what a system is intended, advertised, or "supposed" to do. What matters is what it actually does in the real world, what behaviours it influences, and what outcomes it produces.

And look, if you can’t see the extremely clear, direct connection between this (extremely flawed, actually problematic version of) CNC subset and “AI is inevitable, you are the problem if you won’t fall in line” … well, you really need to do some work on consent and power dynamics.

It has become an identity now for "estranged parents." And once that happened, now there are groups, and influencers, and YouTube channels, and online courses, and everything else under the sun for them to maintain that identity within a community of the like-minded.

I talk to my students about this a lot. In short, that Positivistic Science holds absolute cultural authority over "real" knowledge. Which is why STEM fields are equated with intelligence. Thus, any kind of critical thinking that requires reconstruction, interpretation, or experience is dismissed.

I want to make another point here, that I think Faine does an excellent job of highlighting: there isn't anything particularly wrong with putting on sex parties with consenting adults A big issue here is that women are being pressured to attend in order to network *professionally*

And you can directly walk this back to Gamergate and before. The argument that women "invaded" male gaming spaces (like D&D and video games), that women only game for male attention, are all derived from the same mentality that got us Ready Player One, The Manosphere, and Palantir.

This was Biden's ultimate failure. The inability to see that people weren't voting for Biden because they especially liked Biden. It was because they hated Trump. Now, Democrats are about to make the same mistake again. They think votes for them validate their inaction and their corporatism.

My advisor once told me, "Your dissertation will be the worst thing you ever write in your career." Honestly, it was the best advice I ever received. Because the point of the dissertation was to demonstrate mastery to your committee. That's it. That's all it needed to do. The book comes later.
