n diesem Jahr erhält Prof. Dr. Kilian Schober den Georges-Köhler-Preis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Immunologie. Mit seinen grundlegenden Forschungsarbeiten zur Vielfalt der T-Zellen und T-Zellrezeptoren setzte sich der Forscher vom Institut für Mikrobiologie des Universitätsklinikums Erlangen im Wettbewerb durch.

Kilian Schobers Forschungsgruppe fokussiert sich auf den T-Zellrezeptor, der auf der Oberfläche einer jeden T-Zelle vorkommt. Diesen muss man sich wie einen Schlüssel vorstellen, der zu einem ganz bestimmten Schloss, nämlich einem spezifischen Antigen passt. Ein Antigen sitzt zum Beispiel auf einer virusinfizierten Zelle oder einer Tumorzelle und wird im Idealfall vom Immunsystem bekämpft. Findet der passende Schlüssel ins richtige Schloss wird das Virus oder die Tumorzelle unschädlich gemacht.

Jede T-Zelle verfügt über einen anderen T-Zellrezeptor, der zur Ausschaltung eines ganz bestimmten „Störenfrieds“ vorgesehen ist. Manche T-Zelltypen, die sogenannten T-Killerzellen, können virusinfizierte Zellen bekämpfen; T-Gedächtniszellen bilden ein immunologisches Gedächtnis mit den spezifischen Informationen des Antigens, um bei späteren Infektionen die entsprechend erfolgreiche Abwehrtruppe an T-Zellen aufbauen zu lassen.
