Just discovered that Spotify does a "Wrapped for Authors" on their audiobook demographics for the year. Fun! In my experience, climate/energy stuff is usually quite male-skewed, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that my book listeners weren't skewed *that* much!
Pie chart showing that 54% of listeners were male; 42% female; 3% non-specified, and 1% non-binary.

In the last decades, the world has made fantastic progress against extreme poverty. In 1990, 2.3 billion people lived in extreme poverty. Since then, the number of extremely poor people has declined by 1.5 *billion* people. 🧵
A stacked area chart showing the total population (split by World Bank region) living in extreme poverty, defined as living below the International Poverty Line of $3 per day. Shown from 1990 to 2025, with World Bank projections from 2026–2040. The data is adjusted for inflation and cost of living differences.

Rapid progress against extreme poverty in recent decades has slowed and is projected to end.

In 1990, 2.3 billion people lived in extreme poverty. Since then, the number of extremely poor people has declined by 1.5 billion people.

The number of people in extreme poverty is projected to decline, from 831 million people in 2025 to 793 million people in 2030. After 2030, the number of extremely poor people is expected to increase.

The data source is Lakner et al (2024), updated using the World Bank PIP (2025). The chart is licensded CC BY to Our World in Data.

Good thread from Dave about the new IEA "Current Policies Scenario" making a lot of the headlines. Here is a very quick mock-up I made of what this scenario assumes for solar PV additions through to 2035, with historical context. I'll let you decide whether this seems likely.
Line chart showing global solar PV additions rising steeply to 2025, then flattening at about 540 GW per year through 2035, reflecting the IEA’s Current Policies Scenario.

The ensemble mean of Google DeepMind's experimental machine learning weather model had Hurricane Melissa hitting Jamaica 7 days out. That's very impressive.
A screenshot from Google Weather Lab: Cyclones (Preview) showing ensemble model forecasts for a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean region. The map background is dark, with landmasses labeled in gray, including Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico, and parts of Central America. Numerous thin blue lines indicate ensemble forecast tracks from the ECMWF HRES model, spreading from the southwestern Caribbean Sea northward and northeastward across Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and into the Atlantic Ocean east of the Bahamas. A circular blue marker labeled “2” indicates the storm’s position northeast of Hispaniola, corresponding to a Category 2 hurricane intensity. The left panel displays model and observation options, with ECMWF HRES selected, along with storm markers, ensemble markers, tracks, ensemble tracks, cones, and wind speed colors. The bottom panel shows an initialization time of Wednesday, October 22, 2025, 07:00, and a lead time of 8 days 6 hours (Thursday, October 30, 2025, 12:00). The visualization indicates forecast uncertainty and potential paths of the storm through the Caribbean and toward the western Atlantic.

A key challenge for data centres/AI is that they are very geographically concentrated. See this chart from the IEA. Even if data centres are "just" 1-2% of global electricity, if you're adding a reasonable amount quickly, the local grids serving this demand are going to struggle.
