n diesem Jahr erhält Prof. Dr. Kilian Schober den Georges-Köhler-Preis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Immunologie. Mit seinen grundlegenden Forschungsarbeiten zur Vielfalt der T-Zellen und T-Zellrezeptoren setzte sich der Forscher vom Institut für Mikrobiologie des Universitätsklinikums Erlangen im Wettbewerb durch.

Kilian Schobers Forschungsgruppe fokussiert sich auf den T-Zellrezeptor, der auf der Oberfläche einer jeden T-Zelle vorkommt. Diesen muss man sich wie einen Schlüssel vorstellen, der zu einem ganz bestimmten Schloss, nämlich einem spezifischen Antigen passt. Ein Antigen sitzt zum Beispiel auf einer virusinfizierten Zelle oder einer Tumorzelle und wird im Idealfall vom Immunsystem bekämpft. Findet der passende Schlüssel ins richtige Schloss wird das Virus oder die Tumorzelle unschädlich gemacht.

Jede T-Zelle verfügt über einen anderen T-Zellrezeptor, der zur Ausschaltung eines ganz bestimmten „Störenfrieds“ vorgesehen ist. Manche T-Zelltypen, die sogenannten T-Killerzellen, können virusinfizierte Zellen bekämpfen; T-Gedächtniszellen bilden ein immunologisches Gedächtnis mit den spezifischen Informationen des Antigens, um bei späteren Infektionen die entsprechend erfolgreiche Abwehrtruppe an T-Zellen aufbauen zu lassen.

Dr. Janna Heide erhält in diesem Jahr den Fritz-und-Ursula-Melchers-Postdoktorandenpreis 2026 für ihre Forschung zur Rolle bestimmter Gewebszellen bei der Unterdrückung der Immunabwehr in Tumoren – und zu neuen Möglichkeiten, diesen Mechanismus therapeutisch zu blockieren. 

Während ihrer Postdoktorandenzeit an der University of Chicago von 2020 bis 2025 zeigte Janna Heide, dass tumorassoziierte Fibroblasten die Immunabwehr gezielt hemmen können, wodurch das Tumorwachstum begünstigt wird. Tumorassoziierte Fibroblasten sind Bindegewebszellen, die den Tumor umgeben. Die Immunabwehr wird durch eine epigenetische Umprogrammierung in den tumorassoziierten Fibroblasten geschwächt, die durch das Enzym NNMT (Nicotinamid-N-Methyltransferase) vermittelt wird. Das führt dazu, dass Botenstoffe gebildet werden, die dazu beitragen, dass immunsuppressive Zellen – genauer die MDSCs (myeloide Suppressorzellen) – angelockt werden. Diese Immunzellen bremsen gezielt die Aktivität von CD8+ T-Killerzellen aus, die unter anderem Tumorzellen bekämpfen.

Clara de la Rosa del Val wird von der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Immunologie für zwei ihrer Forschungsprojekte geehrt. In ihrer ersten Arbeit identifizierte die aus Madrid stammende Forscherin essenzielle Moleküle und chemische Signalstoffe, die dazu führen, dass T-Zellen ins zentrale Nervensystem gelangen. Dort angekommen stoßen diese Immunzellen jene autoimmunen und chronisch-entzündlichen Prozesse an, die zur Entstehung von Multipler Sklerose beitragen. Bei Multipler Sklerose ist das Immunsystem fehlgeleitet und greift die Isolierschicht der Nervenfasern von Gehirn und Rückenmark an. Dies verursacht die typischen Symptome der Autoimmunerkrankung: Seh- und Gangstörungen, Taubheitsgefühle, Kribbeln in den Gliedmaßen und Muskelschwäche.

Berlin – Die Robert-Koch-Stiftung zeichnet am 14. November 2025 in Berlin drei exzellente Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen mit dem Post-Doktorand*innen-Preis aus. Die Stiftung würdigt jährlich junge Forschende, die durch ihre innovativen Arbeiten wesentliche Beiträge zum Verständnis infektiologischer, immunologischer und mikrobiologischer Prozesse leisten. In diesem Jahr gehen die Preise an Dr. med. Anna-Maria Globig für Immunologie, Dr. Alexander Lercher für Virologie und an Dr. Dominik Brokatzky Hygiene und Mikrobiologie.

BIH-Wissenschaftlerin Dr. Lucie Loyal erhält den Post-Doktoranden-Preis für Immunologie 2024. Sie erforscht die Immunkompetenz und die Immunreaktionen des Menschen. So ist sie Erstautorin zweier wissenschaftlicher Veröffentlichungen in den Fachmagazinen Nature und Science, die gezeigt haben, dass viele Menschen durch eine Immunität gegen andere Coronaviren bereits vor schweren COVID-19-Krankheitsverläufen geschützt waren.

Stefanie Scheu is Professor of Immunology and Director of the Institute of Immunology at Rostock University Medical Center. She studied Biology at the Technical University of Munich and carried out postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco. She subsequently established her independent research career as an Emmy Noether group leader. Her research centers on infection immunology, with a focus on dendritic cells and type I interferon responses. Her group investigates how specialized immune cell subsets shape protective immunity and immune pathology during infection and autoinflammation.

 

In this series of lectures, the DGfI Commission on Gender Equality and Career Development provides a forum for excellent female immunologists. They will share their exciting research, but also talk about their experiences in forming a career as women in STEM (=MINT).

EFIS is once again awarding the Ita Askonas Prize for outstanding female scientists this year.  Nominations must be submitted exclusively by an EFIS member society, which may submit up to three candidates. Nominations submitted independently without the endorsement of an EFIS member society will not be considered.
Last year, the DGfI Commission for Equal Opportunities and Career Advancement decided to invite applications this year so that every interested female scientist has the opportunity to apply. Therefore, we hereby invite all outstanding female scientists within the DGfI to apply for a nomination this year. Application deadline: May 30, 2026
Requirements are: 
Group leadership experience of at least 4 years, maximum 10 years 
Membership in the German Society for Informatics (DGfI) for at least 1 year 
The application should be submitted in English and include the following:
✅ Letter of Motivation (including original research contribution, innovations of mentorship of early-career scientists) 
✅ CV 
✅ List of publications (distinguished between a) original research papers, b) review and book chapters, c) Editorials, no conference abstracts) 
✅ Separate list of five most significant publications (brief explanation of why they consider each publication important)

1. Year the candidate established its own laboratory 
2. Year of PhD/MD completion 
3. Number of supervised MSc and PhD students

Am 30.4. um 17 Uhr findet unser Webinar mit Prof. Carolin Daniel (Helmholtz Zentrum, München) und Prof. Matthias Edinger (Universitätsklinikum, Regensburg) statt.

Das Webinar startet mit jeweils einem Impulsvortrag zu den Themen „Immunsystem und Stoffwechsel im Dialog – die zentrale Rolle der regulatorischen T-Zellen“ und „Immunregulation in der allogenen Stammzelltransplantation“. Danach besteht Raum für inhaltlichen Austausch. Bei der Online-Anmeldung ist Platz für Fragen an die Vortragenden eingerichtet. Diese sammeln wir und fassen sie zusammen. Frau Daniel und Herr Edinger werden diese Fragen und andere im Anschluss an ihren Impulsvortrag aufgreifen. Wir freuen uns darauf!

Prof. Carolin Daniel: Immunsystem und Stoffwechsel im Dialog – die zentrale Rolle der regulatorischen T-Zellen
Carolin Daniel ist Professorin für Immunmodulation an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München und Direktorin des Instituts für Metabolismus und Immunologie am Helmholtz Zentrum München. Ihr Labor untersucht das Zusammenspiel von Immunsystem und Metabolismus, mit besonderem Fokus auf regulatorische T-Zellen. Sie verfolgt die Vision, diese gezielt für die präzise Manipulation des Immunsystems zu nutzen, um Autoimmunität und Stoffwechselerkrankungen wie Diabetes effektiv zu bekämpfen.


Prof. Matthias Edinger: Immunregulation in der allogenen Stammzelltransplantation 
Prof. Edinger ist Leiter des Bereichs Stammzelltransplantation & Zelltherapie am Universitätsklinikum Regensburg und Direktoriumsmitglied des Leibniz-Instituts für Immuntherapie. Professor Matthias Edinger und sein Team untersuchen immunologische Mechanismen der allogenen Stammzelltransplantation (SZT). Ziel ist es, Immunreaktionen zwischen Spenderzellen und Empfänger nach einer SZT besser zu verstehen, um die Sicherheit und Wirksamkeit dieser Behandlungsmethode zu verbessern.
