95% of papers reporting antibody-based analysis of p16-INK4a used antibodies for an unrelated protein, p16-ARC. Despite using the wrong antibody, authors reported the expected results: > Genetic perturbations of p16-INK4a altered reported p16-ARC levels. 1/

Let's learn about horseshoe crabs (family Limulidae). In a few nights, a female can lay over 100,000 transparent eggs. The fertilized eggs hatch within 2-4 weeks, having gone through 4 embryonic molts within the egg. During this time, they're sometimes called "trilobite larvae."

I found these immune cells just finished mitosis but their midbody is still yet to be resolved. How cool? If you zoom in to the midbody, you can see its classical shape just like in the textbooks. I love these little details.

My group at Science has been running a big campaign to engineer new channelrhodopsins. Excited to share the first results from it today: a suite of highly sensitive new opsins. We call them "WAChRs". Everyday indoor office lighting is enough to activate them pretty strongly.

Ant reproduction is getting weirder and weirder. Here’s the latest: queens of a Mediterranean harvester ant mate with males from a different species and then lay eggs that clonally inherit those males’ genome. I.e., they lay eggs that develop into a different species. 🤯
