I often wonder how successful a populist left party could be if it could manage to hold mainstream foreign policy positions. I guess we'll never know.

Let asylum seekers work: it'll fix a few problems in our labour market, save taxpayers some cash and mean we don't need giant asylum sites like MOD Bicester. Or we could keep being performatively awful to asylum seekers for no benefit.

the obvious parallel which i am surprised isn’t invoked more is CRISPR. “we can edit genes directly in situ like a text file” is a potentially terrifying, literally species altering technology—which the scientific community soberly considered, and set out rigorous guidelines for. It worked!

Of course, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? was absolutely published as a trash sci-fi paperback. It was only towards the end of his life that PKD started to get the recognition as a literary novelist that he had always sought.

What I always find fascinating about this stuff is that the "non-brewed condiment" label isn't, as you'd think, to do with modern food-labelling laws. It's because of the temperance movement more than a century ago.

This seems a good thing but I’m not sure it’s ideal that the UK’s cordon sanitaire against the far right is a random number generator mediated by an unevenly distributed set of levers poorly labelled “Tactical Vote?”

Great moments in Scottish engineering history: James Watt tries to work out how his phone attaches to his selfie stick.
Statue of James Watt. In his right hand he holds a telescopic stick with a frame at the top; in his left he holds a flat object about the size of a large smartphone. He is scowling at the possibly-not-a-smartphone as if he is tempted to yeet it into the sea. On that basis, it probably _is_ a phone.

I know the Jenkins Commission is old enough to be a parent by now, but it took just 9 months to come up with a range of options for voting reform, including a preferred option. Nothing has changed since then, so there's no reason why Labour couldn't use their majority to implement it right now.

The Orange Book is often misquoted on BlueSky as an economic Liberal trope. Actually, its authors included several Social Liberal writers. It did not present a single view, nor indeed a single philosophy. Those using it to trash LibDems ought perhaps to read it, not rely on the views of others.

This is a poor take that suggests Owen Jones doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's self-serving line that it was all the West's fault. Long 🧵

Despite Cromwell's dictatorship and the Restoration, the English Civil War/Revolution was still a good thing, because it established the principle that the King rules only by the consent of Parliament, as proven in arms in 1688. I don't know whether the Russian Revolution will be vindicated.

Happy #BiVisibilityDay! On this day of the year I’m always reminded of a certain Doctor Who adventure where a pinky-blue spray reveals the completely shocking presence of Them! on the Planet of the Them. ‘Somewhere on this planet there are ten thousand bisexuals!’ #DalekInvisibilityDay
Shock cliffhanger reveal that the Doctor – who came to this planet looking for Daleks – and the Thals – who’ve only ever been seen before fighting Daleks – have just discovered that, on this Planet of the Daleks, in a story titled Planet of the Daleks, there is a Dalek. The Doctor (Jon Pertwee) looks shockedRebec the Thal looks shockedBernard Horsfall as Taron the Thal can’t seem to quite bring himself to look shocked, so his cliffhanger face is mild concern
