There's a lot of excitement about Burnham's speech today... but as far as I can tell it's all due to kick in after the next election. And the overarching context for that election remains grim.

And change needs to come this parliament, not next. There will need to be a tax solution to this also. The strain on local councils is huge and allowing their services to be stretched further only helps political opponents.

Show Me The Bodies was brilliantly done - inevitably a hard read but absolutely essential for anyone in local government. So of course I bought this the moment it came out in paperback and looking forward to reading it

Ok but why has it taken you so long to say it and what have you actually done about it?

Also if he's in jail he can't come round our way and make trouble which is good for the people who'd be at the wrong end of the trouble.

Absolutely zero chance it plays out like this if these are the polls come a GE. Tories and Lab would be higher at the expense of reform due to tactical voting

Have we checked the pipes for lead or perhaps some kind of gas based collective delusion in Westminster because this is absolutely crackers. No the government should not be trying to kill RNLI volunteers and Daniel Thomas does not have a point when he does it!

In London for work, took a little trip up to Kentish Town! I'm very fond of my villages but have to say the walk distance between houses is something I could get used to 🤣

I am the local LD councillor and I have not supported this campaign. No one asked me to, presumably because they knew what I'd say. This just absolutely, categorically untrue.

I was in the Guardian talking about fridge recycling - we are working hard to keep things moving but government needs to intervene to increase capacity and avoid bottlenecks

Why unwanted fridges are piling up at recycling centres across England and Wales
Capacity has been overwhelmed by heatwaves that have pushed white goods to breaking point

If anyone is around please can they ask him his views on masked right-wing mobs blockading ports and trying to beat up teenage cricketers? Since he apparently has time to go for a run I'm sure he'll have time to tell you 👍🏻

Reform has already enjoyed several years of support from a loss-making TV channel whose main function seems to be to give money and favourable coverage to its MPs. The government has done nothing about this. It's probably a more effective way of spending millions than Farage will manage.

This situation is now completely out of control, and makes an irrefutable case for government to bring forward an annual cap on political donations, and fast.

Last year I met with officials from the Electoral Commission and warned them that we were just months away from the sort of political donations that we have just seen Reform attract. I warned them that we faced seeing parties being bought like football clubs - as playthings for billionaires.

I sure am glad the government decided not to regulate political donations because coming up with a workaround for trade unions seemed just too difficult 🙃

Yet again the government is asleep at the wheel. People across the political spectrum have been shouting from day 1 that our donation rules needed tightening up but they dillied and dallied and this is the result

On Andy Burnham's sudden bout of shyness. thecritic.co.uk/sanc...
The close of his statement was an appeal to our better natures. If we were going to ask Israelis and Palestinians to live side-by-side, he said, Britain also had to be a place where “people of all faiths and none have a right to live without prejudice or fear.” Listening to him was Andy Burnham, who has been strangely absent from our public debate for the last few days. In August, we couldn’t move for social media clips from the prime minister, standing on a ladder to discuss his first job, or sitting in a pub to rate bar snacks. But faced with masked thugs trying to shut down British ports over the weekend, Burnham seems to have lost the password for his phone. For a decade now, Britain has had a series of leaders apparently paralysed by the fear that if they say that racism is bad, they’ll be voted out. It would be nice to get one who had a slightly higher opinion of us.

Now that my initial frustration at being messed around has passed... I'm really glad the government has suspended Local Government Reorganisation. Three unitaries was always the wrong choice for Oxfordshire. Thinking again can only be a good thing.

This government reminds me of Joe Biden. Biden didn't want to be the prosecute Trump president, he wanted to pass an infrastructure bill. Burnham doesn't want to be the take on the hard right PM, he wants to do social care reform and devo. But you have to do the task you're set or face disaster.

Better, but there's no need to hem and haw about peaceful protest, this wasn't one, it's not relevant, it just makes you look weak. Also you obviously don't support peaceful protest or you wouldn't have arrested all those grannies holding signs.

I know we're all snarking away and it's all fun and games but it really is quite frightening that some kind of wannabe fascist militia are blockading our main port and the government and police don't seem to have a problem with it.
