three key problem with HOI: 1.) Germany is the country that gets to do stuff. It’s the de facto “protagonist country” 2.) In order for it to reliably do stuff, it has to be cracked or the game ends in 1940 3.) Refusal to grasp with Nazi atrocities makes it implicitly endorse a clean Wehrmacht myth

I suppose I agree with those saying that there has to be some form of rehabilitation for those guilty of rape and crimes like it. But I think rehabilitation without atonement is bad. And I believe that a suitable form of atonement, for people who escape going to jail, is ostracism and self-exile.

this is exactly my opinion. there may be a superstrate of extremely difficult and unique safety problems around AI, but the substrate is simply that no one takes basic precautions seriously becasue they imagine (or pretend to imaigne) that it is futile, and basic precautions slow down launches.

I keep seeing people say some version of "it used to be normal to politely disagree on things before the Internet," and I don't think that's right. It was and remains normal to not be a shithead in face-to-face communication. We just have less of that now, and WAY less with people we disagree with.

The issue with "monsters are marginalized people in fantasy clothes" is that it ends up with things like people making orcs more explicitly like people from IRL sub-Saharan Africa. "There's kind of a racist subtext with orcs, so we've fixed it by making them H. Rider Haggard Zulus." Which, um.

TIL that enslaved people who ran away to the woods (as opposed to cities, the north, etc.) were referred to not just as ‘maroons’ (the term I knew), but ‘outliers.’ I checked, and this word seems originally to have referred to a stone that was quarried but not used.

Our medieval sources on Norse don’t give us an organized canon, so when a place is mentioned one time it’s hard to know what to do with it. “Folkvang” is one. I doubt many if any poets thought of it as another afterlife; I suggest it may just be another name of Valhalla that alliterates with Freyja.

Hebrew punctuation precedes Zionism as a political movement by about a 800 years. It was not in any way integral to "spoken Hebrew" and the unity between Jews across the world was never "artificial". It's just wrong on so many levels.
