OTD 1977: Tom Robinson Band – 2-4-6-8 Motorway Their first and biggest hit, with a terrific riff from Danny Kustow’s blistering lead guitar Hugely catchy driving song, arguably more relatable than Tom’s other driving songs, which all steer desperately through haunting post-apocalyptic landscapes…
Tom Robinson Band – 2-4-6-8 Motorway single: orange stencilled logo around raised fist on blackThe Rock ’n’ Roll Years 1978 – Danny Kustow on lead guitar, Tom Robinson on bass and lead vocals, “THE TOM ROBINSON BAND” with (Sing If You’re) Glad To Be Gay, a 1987 TV experience which was both excruciating and life-changing for 15-year-old-me, but that’s another story.
NB I’ve not got my numbers mixed up: this was a documentary about 1978, broadcast in 1987. My wrongness consists merely in using this particular band photo to illustrate a different song in a different year.

OTD 1979: The Legend of King Arthur BBC1 Serious, history-toned version of the myth with the magic toned down (yet still there) Scripted by – yes – the Andrew Davies Andrew Burt is Arthur David Robb Lancelot But most memorable for boy me was Maureen O’Brien playing Morgan le Fay as an evil nun.
The Legend of King Arthur – The Complete Series Simply Media DVD cover
Andrew Burt’s King Arthur in Sutton Hoo-ish armour, around him Merlin, Guinevere, Lancelot
But you can see their selling point: “Andrew Davies' sumptuous adaptation of the timeless saga” (though this adaptation isn’t timeless at all, but tries to give much more of a sense of a real time, several centuries earlier than most)

Talking Heads – (Nothing But) Flowers 7” single cover: lyrics printed in yellow capitals over leaves and flowers. I prefer this single mix, which gets going faster.

Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it’s nothing but flowers
There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
You got it, you got it
We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner
We got it, we got it
There was a shopping mall
Now it’s all covered with flowers
You’ve got it, you’ve got it
If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower

[…You get the idea.]

OTD 2014 Richard and I selected wedding rings (ahead of October 26) We’d already worn plain gold bands for 15 years These caught our eye in evolution of our own tradition, the same and more: Interlocking gold, white gold and red gold bands We’re still very happy with our choice. And of ring!
Richard and I in grey wedding suits with golden ties smile and press our hands together with new interlocking gold, white gold and red gold Trinity rings on our wedding day in 2014, inside Stockport Town HallRichard and I back in our wedding suits, ties and bowler hats on our 5th-and-25th anniversary in 2019, this time with beards and outside Stockport Town Hall (cream pillars rising behind and above us), again smiling and pressing our hands together with our interlocking gold, white gold and red gold Trinity wedding rings

Who will the traitor murder in—The Avengers? It’s all a… OTD 1968: Game Op-art direction Deadly giant games Tara King explodes into action Villainous Peter Jeffrey is a killer Avengers fan! Even for The Avengers, this is outrageously playful. And Steed cheats. Obviously.
Tara King (Linda Thorson) in vivid pink, striding across a battlefield with soldiers beside her and an explosion behind her Steed (Patrick Macnee) has just escaped handcuffs and looks with mild surprise at the large bomb (labelled BOMB) in front of himPeter Jeffrey with glints in his eyes and teeth bared in triumph. One of his more understated moments. The villain moves the counter down the giant Snakes and Ladders game to REVENGE

What’s a poster you had in your room growing up? [IIRC he was on the ceiling. My brother and I started with strictly parent-adjudicated wall-territories each for football and Doctor Who respectively, then aggressively extended our conflict overhead]
Adric (Matthew Waterhouse) in a black and silver spacesuit. Centrefold poster from Doctor Who magazine (and Doctor Who – Four To Doomsday)
