It's not often you get public information posters that become design classics, and the rabies posters of the 1970s are suitable for framing. As far as I know, no other infection was given an official, none-more-metal, logo. But the rabies logo rocks!

There will always be a place in my heart for the Look-In magazine covers, painted by the great Arnaldo Putzu, which teased all manner of sci-fi/glam rock team-ups. Who wouldn't want to see Cmdr. Koenig stomping to Tiger Feet?

THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE FILM SHOW (1988): Channel 4's early years were an education. This brilliant series, hosted by an enthusiastic Jonathan Ross, introduced me to Russ Meyer, John Waters, Ed Wood, Tsui Hark, Doris Wishman, and in this episode, the Godfather of Gore, H.G. Lewis!

HOUSE OF HAMMER/HALLS OF HORROR (1976/1982): Dez Skinn's beautiful British horror mag featured bags of info and some gorgeous comic strip adaptations of Hammer films. It had a facelift in 1982, branching out into the new decade's horror films (and video nasties!)

The revived EAGLE (1982) was ostensibly the family-friendly alternative to 2000 AD. Nevertheless, it gave us the famously creepy Doomlord, dystopian nightmare The Tower King, fearsome dinosaur Bloodfang, and gritty dole drama Dolebusters!

SATURN 3 (1980): Kirk Douglas, Farrah Fawcett, Harvey Keitel (and Roy Dotrice's voice) star in this disco sci-fi horror that contained enough shocks and gruesome moments to keep 10-year old me happy. It was somehow an 'A'! The BBFC could be so lax back then...

GRANGE HILL series 6 (1983) is astonishingly great drama from start to finish. The centrepiece is school bully Gripper Stebson's transformation into a racist thug surrounded by cowardly sycophants. Hard-but-fair (mainly hard) teacher 'Bullet' Baxter is having none of it...

The first episode of WORZEL GUMMIDGE (1979) sees the loveable scarecrow come alive for the first time, and it's directed like a scene from an Italian zombie film. Lucio Fulci would approve!

THE INCREDIBLE HULK: PROMETHEUS (1980) Poor David Banner is trapped mid-transformation (the Demi-Hulk!) thanks to meteor radiation. The Hulk's transformations used to unnerve me as a kid, and that mid-point was the scariest. The great Bill Bixby sells the whole thing. Massively underrated actor.

One of my favourite moments from ARTHUR C CLARKE'S MYSTERIOUS WORLD (1980): Mr and Mrs Osborne relate the curious tale of the hail of hazelnuts which battered them one day. "I don't know why you'd suck up Hazelnuts in March". Quite, Mr Osborne.

POWERFUL STUFF: SUBSTATION (1988): Afternoon PIFs intended for children's television were a curious thing. There you are, watching The Real Ghostbusters or Knightmare, when the ad break hits and you're confronted with a double electrocution. It's enough to put you off your Findus Crispy Pancakes.

The 1960s were Year Zero for the Scarred For Life era, and when I see things like DAISY (1964), an attack ad urging Americans to vote for Lyndon B. Johnson, I'm glad I wasn't around then. I'd get more than my share of nuclear anxiety in the 1980s, thank you very much.

ROCKING CHAIRS IN HORROR: Is there a scarier piece of furniture than the simple rocking chair? Salem's Lot, Shadows series 2, The Waltons' poltergeist episode, and the Devil Baby storyline from Soap would suggest so. The tip of a huge, rocking iceberg.

Stumbled across an illustration I did years ago for a brilliant @manoghosts.bsky.social story, and remembered the eeriness of life-size charity boxes for the charity now called Scope. The story is about one that comes to life after being vandalised once too often, and wreaks its revenge!
