This is my favourite Borges story.
The Witness by Borges and translated by ANTHONY KERRIGAN

In a stable lying almost in the shadow of the new stone church, a man with
gray eyes and a gray beard, stretched on the ground amidst the animal
odors, meekly seeks death like someone seeking sleep. The day, faithful to
vast secret laws, continuously displaces and confounds the shadows in the
wretched stable. Outside stretch the tilled fields, a deep ditch filled up with
dead leaves, and the tracks of a wolf in the black mud where the woods
begin. The man sleeps and dreams, forgotten. The bells calling to prayer
awake him. In the kingdoms of England, the sound of the bells is already
one of the customs of the afternoon, but the man, while still a boy, had
seen the face of Woden, had seen holy dread and exultation, had seen the
rude wooden idol weighed down with Roman coins and heavy vestments,
seen the sacrifice of horses, dogs, and prisoners. Before dawn he would be
dead and with him would die, never to return, the last firsthand images of
the pagan rites. The world would be poorer when this Saxon was no more.
We may well be astonished by space-filling acts which come to an end
when someone dies, and yet something, or an infinite number of things,
die in each death—unless there is a universal memory, as the theosophists
have conjectured. There was a day in time when the last eyes to see Christ
were closed forever. The battle of Junín and the love of Helen died with
the death of some one man. What will die with me when I die? What
pathetic or frail form will the world lose? Perhaps the voice of Macedonio
Fernandez, the image of a horse in the vacant space at Serrano and
Charcas, a bar of sulfur in the drawer of a mahogany desk?

Never forget that time Sam Neill gave a quote about murder that was so beautifully kabonkers, we all assumed it was a Clickhole bit initially

SAM NEILL

GENERAL JOHN MACARTHUR

If you were to commit a murder,

how would you do it?

It's got to be big! No slipping

something into someones drink, that's just

pathetic. I'd use a steamroller, just leave a

stain on the road. There's probably a couple

of people I'd put under a steamroller,

but I won't say who they are, otherwise

when they see a steamroller coming

their way they'll be on full alert. And

steamrollers don't go very fast...

Instagram post announcing Sam Neill’s passing.

It is with immense sadness that the whãnau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July 2026 in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.
The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.
The
family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent's Private
Hospital for their incredible care.
More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.

I've decided to compile a definitive thread of photos of the best sheep I've photographed during my walks in the countryside, together with supporting biographical information. I will put the vital story associated with each sheep in the alt text, since some of it is a little long to fit in a post.
A nihilistic sheep, who, like so many other sheep, just wants to watch the world burn, staring at me insouciantly, moments after it has set fire to a large portion of the United Kingdom.

A hit song on the Billboard 100 charts is termed *$k$-good* if it is _ever_ in a weekly top-$k$, and *$k$-immediate* if it _debuts_ in the top-$k$.

An artist is *$(n,k)$-Olivian* if their $n$ first $k$-good hits are all also $k$-immediate.

*Headline 1.* Olivia Rodrigo is the first $(10,10)$-Olivian woman.

This is incredible
Millennium Challenge 2002 (MC02) was a major war game exercise conducted by the United States Armed Forces under United
States Joint Forces Command in mid-2002, running from 24 July to 15 August. The exercise involved both live exercises and computer simulations, costing US$250 million (equivalent to about $448M in 2025), the most expensive war game in US military history.!!]
MCO2 was set in 2007, intended to be a test of future military "transformation" —a transition towards new technologies that enabled network-centric warfare, and providing a more effective command and control of current and future weaponry and tactics. The simulated combatants were the United States, referred to as "Blue", and a fictitious state in the Persian Gulf, "Red", often characterized as Iran or Iraq.
[2][3]MC02 was an experiment mandated by Congress in 2000 to "explore critical war fighting challenges at the operational level of war that will confront United States joint military forces after 2010."[4] The simulation took two years of planning and involved 13,000 troops. The Red force, led by retired Marine Corps Lieutenant General Paul K. Van Riper, used numerous asymmetrical tactics unanticipated by the Blue force; a pre-emptive cruise missile attack sank sixteen Blue
warships and led to the exercise's suspension.
The simulation was restarted with Blue forces fully restored, and Red forces heavily constrained from free-play "to the point where the end state was scripted", 4) resulting in a Blue victory. Van Riper later criticized the cost of the exercise as "wasted". [5]Exercise suspension and restart
At this point, the exercise was suspended, Blue's ships were "re-floated", and the rules of engagement were changed; this was later justified by General Peter Pace as follows: "You kill me in the first day and I sit there for the next 13 days doing nothing, or you put me back to life and you get 13 more days' worth of experiment out of me. Which is a better way to do it?"[2]After the war game was restarted, its participants were forced to follow a script drafted to ensure a Blue Force victory. Among
other rules imposed by this script, Red Force was ordered to turn on their anti-aircraft radar
in order for them to be destroyed, and during a combined parachute assault by the 82nd Airborne Division and Marines air assaulting on
the then new and still controversial MV-22, Van Riper's forces were ordered not to shoot down any of the approaching aircraft. 81[91 Van Riper also claimed that exercise officials denied him
the opportunity to use his own tactics and ideas against Blue Force, and that they also ordered Red Force not to use certain weapons
systems against Blue Force and even ordered the location of Red Force units to be revealed. 11°! The postmortem JFCOM report on MC02 would say "As the exercise progressed, the OPFOR free-play was eventually constrained to the point where the end state was scripted.
This scripting ensured a blue team operational victory and established conditions in the exercise for transition operations."
