As a scientist, I wish everyone knew that getting ‘bogged down’ isn’t actually a bad thing. Here’s why. 🧵 1/

'Can we comprehend a place suspended between life and death? Do we want to?' Dead nor alive, safe nor dangerous, beautiful nor dreadful, bogs are thresholds that refuse categorisation, writes @queenofpeat.bsky.social, in an extract from her book 'Boglands' www.caughtbytheriver.net/2026/09/bogl...

I am a mom and scientist begging everyone to look closer at the muck. We’ve been conditioned to see wetlands as wastelands. But three decades of research, I see a fiercely defiant wilderness. The boreal mire is a dynamic carbon-trapping vault that in some places has outlasted ice ages. 1/

@queenofpeat.bsky.social Merritt Turetsky's enthusiasm for boglands is contagious. Her new book celebrates the dueling realities of these incredible ecosystems: Filled with decay but teeming with life; places of refuge and risk; an ally in a changing climate as well as a potential foe. My review:
sciencenews.org
Bogland explores beautifully strange ecosystems
An ecosystem ecologist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Turetsky evocatively describes the beauty, danger and vitality of these ecosystems in her book, Bogland.

Some of the most valuable things on Earth are hidden in places most people would rather not walk. Peatlands look like wastelands: wet, buggy treacherous. But beneath the moss lies a living archive of ecological and human history, and one of the planet’s great stores of carbon. 1/ 🧵

We tend to think of bogs as dangerous places — landscapes where you can lose your way, disappear into the monotonous mist, or become trapped in deep peat. But for centuries, bogs also offered something remarkably valuable: Refuge 1/ 🧵

Energy security isn't just about what we build. It's also about what we protect. 🌍🌱🧪 Peatlands cover just 3% of Earth's land but store double the carbon of all global forests. Yet, critical mineral extraction and energy infrastructure are putting them at risk. 1/
