The amount of money behind frats at schools like UA, UVA… I doubt a ban will ever happen. It’s like trying to overthrow the government. It’s literally the government. (Cf The Machine.)

I totally get why people went around the paywall to read my first @beckbook.com excerpt, but I want to tell you that an ABSURD number (cannot disclose) of people apparently became NYMag subscribers directly as a result of wanting to read the article? I feel like this bodes well for consumer demand??

The answer is pretty simple they were a bunch of cynical grifters who didn’t actually want to do politics but there’s the bigger question why environmentalists never adopted electoralism as a strategy

Shhhh Sneak preview of @beckbook.com's exegesis on Philip K. Dick Don't tell my editor 🤫 beckbook.com
THE LAST TEMPTATION oF BECK

Dick and Hubbard--two more different science fictior writers Can
scarcely be imagined. And yet, both claimed to have received visions, to
have been granted prophecy.

What do you do if God speaks to you? What do you do once you've
glimpsed the ultimate Truth?

Dick died in 1982, never having come to a conclusion about what had
happened to him. He left a record of what hed experienced, but left it to
his readers to form their own opinions. His work remains in print: no
church has declared it to be scripture.

That said: Dick did, in fact, invent a religion. It's in his novel Do An-
droids Dream of Electric Sheep? (later the loose inspiration for the film
Blade Runner). In the world of the novel, a new faith emerges after a
nuclear apocalypse. Its adherents call it Mercerism

Mercerism's practices revolve around a machine-the "empathy box"--
that one has to interface with by holding two handles. It bears an uncanny
resemblance to an E-meter. But this fictional device doesn't measure your
emotions: it stokes them

When you grasp the handles of the empathy box, you suddenly feel as
though you are a man named Wilbur Mercer, who is climbing up a
treacherous hill, only to be pelted with rocks by mysterious and evil fig
ures in your periphery. People use the machine to experience Mercer's
physical and emotional pain-as well as the emotions of all the other
worshippers using an empathy box at that moment.

In real life, this is what art does. It's what art is for. Art, at its best.

I was raised as a boy, but I was sexualized (without being outright molested or anything) by multiple theater teachers and directors in high school. Having to perform rape scenes, appearing near-nude on stage, etc. It led to a lot of gender trauma that kept me in the closet a long time

This was a banger paragraph too web.archive.org/web/20190511...
“This is the most beautiful miracle I’ve ever seen,” Vanellope declares upon entering the internet, and we are given no reason to disagree. This is the digital utopia that tech CEOs verbally conjure when they attempt to sell us on their agendas, a marketplace of dollars and ideas where everyone’s free to satisfy their desires and escape the disappointments and inefficiencies of fleshy existence. Sure, there’s a brief excursion to the darknet, where viruses and scams lurk, but no brands appear there, and it’s presented as a marginal portion of the landscape. This is not the Internet as it truly is — Ralph encounters no racist Facebook memes, Vanellope never accidentally wanders into Pornhub — but rather as it is sold to us.

Possibly the grimmest kicker I ever wrote for a culture essay: web.archive.org/web/20190511...
But it seems all too likely that they will be done poorly. One struggles to imagine brands being okay with Roger Rabbit–level subversion these days. It’ll all be focus-group-approved portrayals that advance the joint agendas of the creators and the companies, alike. The temptation to take a dull plot and spice it up with branded guest appearances is simply too strong. Such a process can create an illusion of familiarity and comfort that masks mediocre workmanship, and lord knows Hollywood will take any chance to spray a new perfume on a turd. To paraphrase Orwell: If you want a vision of the future, imagine Luke Skywalker and Jean-Luc Picard fighting Voldemort — forever.

The more I hear about H*rry Pott*r references shoehorned into recent Warner Bros. TV shows for Brand Synergy™️, the more I remember this sadly prescient essay I wrote for Vulture in 2018:
web.archive.org
Ralph Breaks the Internet and the Rise of Mash-up Cinema
It’s not unreasonable to expect that branded mash-ups are on their way to becoming a staple aspect of blockbuster movies.
