according to calculations, the 2022 U.S. total additional cost spent on diesel (vs 2021) amounted to $59.426 billion. so far in 2026, the additional cost (vs 2025) is ~$47.9 billion and we could surpass 2022's tally by early November at current pace.

the Teamsters have authorized a strike at the Bayway refinery in Linden, NJ. interestingly, they mention the refinery processes 275 million barrels of crude oil and 145 million barrels of gasoline each day. did the facility suddenly 1000x overnight? keeping an eye on this.

NEW REFINERY breaks ground- in Kenya- a cool $16 billion being invested by Aliko Dangote for a new 700,000 barrel-per-day refinery, or $22,857 for every barrel of capacity. Expected completion is 2030- its the largest industrial project in East Africa.

and just like that ULSD futures are again actively spiking, Oct ULSD (about to expire) up almost 30c/gal, while the more active Nov ULSD contract is up 23c/gal- until broad de-escalation, there's a continued risk of this happening. gasoline futures up more modestly.

CITGO plans to send the first gasoline produced at its Lemont, IL outside Chicago to the New York market as part of the reversed bi-directional flow on the Laurel Pipeline as I highlighted a few weeks ago. This is the first time moving fuels via pipeline in this way.

US Goverment looking to sell the last 40 million barrels from the 172 million barrel SPR exchange announced back in March, but not many buyers looking. June RFP only saw about half a million bought. Oil isn't so much the challenge right now as global refining capacity.

seeing Georgia stations that haven't dropped gas prices yet? it's not necessarily foul play. stations still have tanks full of fuel they bought before midnight with the tax already paid. as they take deliveries of tax-free fuel in the days ahead, prices will come down.

some good news for diesel- average diesel prices are seeing weekly drops in 46 of the nation's 50 states so far, with double digit decreases in 20 states. we'll likely continue to see more diesel declines for the time being.

Ohio lawmakers have introduced legislation that could provide for a gas tax holiday for 3 months, paid for by moving $725 million to the general revenue fund, reducing gas prices by 38.5c/gal and diesel by 47c/gal- will be considered potentially Wednesday

Texas is now allowing anyone to use tax-free dyed diesel on-road. Typically tax-free dyed diesel is for off-road use only (farms, equipment, etc). Texas is also asking EPA to waive rules on ULSD. However, allowing more sulfur will likely lead to engine damage on newer vehicles.

BREAKING: Georgia Gov. Kemp has just suspended the state's excise tax on fuel for 30 days, taking effect at 12:01am tomorrow. This will reduce gas prices ~33c/gal and diesel ~37c/gal. As this tax is at the wholesalelevel, it will take several days to be passed along.

the White House is floating distributing more dyed diesel. it's the same ULSD with red dye and no taxes, so it could save on-road users ~60c/gal. but farmers already use dyed diesel and are still paying record prices. taxes aren't the problem, supply is.

gas prices have fallen over the weekend, the national average down 4.6c/gal to $4.42/gal so far today (aided by dips in the Great Lakes), with diesel down 9c/gal from its peak. relief will continue for now- for the days ahead- but beyond that- uncertainty.

The Noreaster hitting the NE has resulted in a kinked flow of jet fuel to BOS and limited supply for airlines. Airlines are tankering in fuel via incoming flights to reduce their need for supply, this should resolve once the storm clears.

diesel trades on a world market, just like corn. farmers don't sell cheaper to Americans, and refiners can't either since they buy crude at global prices. force a lower price and they'll make less diesel. less supply means higher prices, not lower.

Pakistan is seeing as many as 5 refineries agree to a $6 billion investment that would increase gasoline output by nearly 75%, while diesel output would rise nearly 40% and match the Euro-V diesel spec of <10ppm sulfur. Pakistan's refining capacity amounts to ~350kbpd.
