Holy shit, shoegaze legends Chapterhouse are FINALLY touring Australia. Definitely a band I never thought would come down here. Whirlpool and the Sunburst EP were two of *the* releases that got me into shoegaze, so I guess I'll be popping over east for a gig or two in February!

I've always said I support two teams, the All Blacks and whoever's playing the Wallabies, so I can't believe I'm saying this but I hope Australia defeats South Africa. [This is not a go at the OP, at all] Party affiliation is an indispensable heuristic in a mass democracy. It says the person on the ballot is "roughly, this stuff" and I don't have to know much about them personally. That has lumps (obviously) and a party needs to deal with it.

The Nationals defector told this masthead One Nation would seek to scrap the climate change department, deregulate the farming sector, cut taxes such as the tobacco excise and slash immigration numbers, if One Nation won enough seats to help the Coalition govern in minority.

People are often surprised by the 1906 stat but it makes sense when you think about it. The South Island was the more populous island, the station is located centrally, Dunedin had a heavy suburban service to Port Chalmers and Mosgiel, and it sat at a key point on the dense Hurunui-Bluff network...

I have a real soft spot for Dunedin railway station, for mine the prettiest station in Australasia. When it opened in 1906 it was New Zealand's busiest railway station; today, alas, it is only used by tourist trains but hopefully the Southerner will ride again!

COOL TAKAHĒ FACT THE FOURTH: you'd think all that eating and pooing would make takahē easy to find. They are in fact champions at hide-and-seek: believed extinct from 1898, they weren't rediscovered for HALF A CENTURY. Geoffrey Orbell needed two trips to Fiordland to finally track them down in 1948
