24 was used as the basis for the Enhanced Interrogation program. Would-be advisors for the ANP watched NCIS in lieu of formal training for the role. Trump-era direct action in Mexico and Latin America is clearly steeped in Sicario, while Yellowstone and Landman shape domestic views.

destroying Greek life would be useful for stemming an entire mode of social reproduction which, as I must remind everyone, was born of the confederate south. Greek life prides itself on keeping the tradition of rape alive in more than one form. Sometimes literal.

shutting down frat houses won't end rape culture, but it will disorganize a lot of rapists, and i think that's probably worth doing if only to destabilize what is apparently an ecology of organizations that functionally exist to rape women per the whole "purpose of a system is what it does" insight.

It feels genuinely ridiculous having to say this, but the point of art is to connect with another human. Someone thought of that painting or melodic line or scene or paragraph that is suddenly making you weep, and that means that they saw you and understood you without even meeting you.

the thing about the "you're out of touch if you haven't heard this song" discourse is that radio has been dead for well over a decade. it's extremely normal to listen to a lot of music but still never hear the songs at the top of the charts.

I think the 'reactionary centrist' concept is probably the best way of describing a lot of these people. They feel they are liberal because they're cosmopolitan and wordly; they have dinner parties, eat hummus, have gay friends. But they *are* conservatives in their actual politics.

it would be helpful to mention japanese labor laws re: layoffs as a factor in these types of stories
Quiet Restructuring vs. U.S.-Style Layoffs

In Japan, U.S.-style sudden mass layoffs are rare by law and custom. Instead, firms practice a "quiet change". They curb hiring, redeploy staff internally, and expand early-retirement schemes. For example, Tokyo Shoko Research reports that 46 listed companies in FY2025 offered early retirement to over 20,000 workers. Notably, many announcements emphasized retraining and redeployment over firing. A consultant's study notes that Japanese companies are focusing on "eliminating redundant tasks" to boost productivity, rather than simply cutting headcount. What, if any, additional considerations apply if large numbers of dismissals (redundancies) are planned? How many employees need to be affected for the additional considerations to apply?
-

In cases of layoffs, courts tend to determine the validity of the dismissal by comprehensively considering the specific circumstances related to the following four elements (Tokyo District Court Decision, January 21, 2000; Osaka High Court Judgment, March 24, 2016, etc.).Since restructuring dismissals are dismissals based on the employer’s circumstances, stricter standards are applied in determining their validity than for dismissals attributable to the employee’s fault. These standards apply regardless of the number of employees targeted for dismissal.

(i) Necessity of Personnel Reduction: The implementation of personnel reduction must be based on sufficient necessity arising from corporate management issues such as recession, decline, or poor business performance, or be recognised as an unavoidable measure.

(ii) Efforts to Avoid Dismissal (Necessity of Selecting Layoffs as a Means of Workforce Reduction) : Measures to avoid layoffs must have been implemented, such as reducing expenses (including cutting overtime pay by stopping overtime work), reducing temporary workers, reducing or eliminating executive compensation and employee bonuses, not renewing fixed-term contracts, halting new hires, suspending pay raises, reassigning employees, or offering voluntary retirement programs.

(iii) Rationality of Selection: Objective and reasonable criteria must be established for selecting employees subject to dismissal, and these criteria must be applied fairly.

(iv) Fairness of the termination process: Conducting labour-management negotiations, individual interviews, and other procedures to provide explanations, disclose information, and engage in consultation with workers.

Republicans don’t have a Nazi problem—they are the Nazi problem
A spate of recent revelations have shown the ideologies and their adherents are one and the same.

Evangelizing isn’t for the people they evangelize. It’s a cult practice that purposefully places members in situations where they are being socially inappropriate, and it uses the feeling of rejection they get from that experience to reinforce their bonds with their fellow believers.

The speed of writing code has never, and will never be the bottleneck. The bottleneck, the limiting factor, is always in the thinking about the code and how it works, understanding it. People who use chatgpt to write code are literally removing the only part of programming that is actually useful.

In retrospect, we’ll see the key trend of the era was an elite revolt by the very rich, politicians and media employees against the idea there should be *any limits at all* on their behaviour, up to and including strangers publicly criticising them. All presented as The Wisdom Of The Average Punter.
one of those things I feel a little ashamed about for taking so long to clock is that rich people are surrounded by yesmen and consequently delude themselves into thinking their predictable bigotries reflect some suppressed yearning of the Common
Man.
