Very cool. A program in NYC gave 2 kWh batteries to families in order to let them run the AC during peak demand and charging the battery at night when energy is cheap. I predict a time when it will be weird that houses didn't have batteries. arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026...

The backers of Prop 45 are counting on the public not being able to tell infill homes near transit from building new roads into wildland / fire areas for sprawl's sake. EB4E recommends a NO on 45 this fall. eastbayforeveryone.org/2026/03/05/s...

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

Boomer on boomer car crashes are increasingly typical in Berkeley. It's largely who is doing both the hitting, and in many cases, the being hit.

If there is a *real* risk from actual, legal Class 2 e-bikes, it's from them tipping over onto toddlers trying to climb onto the back. The kickstands for most long tail-style e-bikes are wildly insufficient for their weight distribution.

The Calmatters series was excellent, and the victims of reckless, repeat DUI driving described in it deserve much better than this. Honestly, the members of California legislature should be embarrassed that this counts as progress.

Question for the chat: If someone introduces themselves to you, an English speaker, and tells you their name with an accent (in today's case, "Jose"), should you: 1. Respond with the closest approximation of the accented name 2. Respond by anglicizing the name 3. It depends (if so, on what?)

Just morally bankrupt shit from CA Highway Patrol. They say that "a bicyclist collided with a vehicle," and admonish riders to "follow the rules of the road" and "wear a helmet." The photos show a bike with a tacoed rear wheel and a car with a smashed windshield. Who collied with whom now?

I’ve had some talks with transit-friendly but very tax-weary friends locally about how RTM felt to them bit like a hostage ransom, and I explained as best I can that the stakes are actually this high and this stark based on how the measure passes or fails. Don’t overthink it!

The bougiefication of Rockridge, Oakland, fueled by single family zoning. These are the same three homes in 2019 and today. With different zoning, capital would go toward converting these 100-year old homes into multi-family housing, a 2-block walk from BART. Instead, people are just upgrading.

“The Bay Area's Top Three Highway Bottlenecks After Potential Transit Cuts

One of the basic points in Mills' The Racial Contract (originally published in 1997!) was that, if nothing else, White Supremacy deserves to be taken seriously as one of the great motivating ideologies of modernity and it's bizarre that political philosophers are so disinclined to treat it as such.

Researchers have been asking, why are pedestrian deaths going up, particularly driven by a spike in the dusk period? Well, right now it's 8:30 pm and I'm walking the baby to sleep, and every other driver I have seen is staring at their phone while rolling stop signs. Just a thought.

One of the many problems with California land use policy is that there are effectively no coffeeshops on non-arterial streets. So your seating options are: 1. Inside (why live in California then?) 2. On a patio (if they have one) 3. On the sidewalk and subject to a barrage of car noise
