It never stopped being funny during the mayoral campaign last year that Sliwa's main driving force was how much he despised Cuomo. They'd be in debates and Cuomo would be all "my opponent Mr Moobandi" and Sliwa would go "I hate you, you piece of shit, fuck you".

Dem leadership spent literally months dawdling, seemingly completely unconcerned, attacking worried people as doomers. Republicans meanwhile within hours were suspending elections and redrawing districts out of existence

Think about how when Dobbs leaked, dem leadership had *months* to plan and instead were caught totally unprepared, thumbs up their asses, when Roe was struck down. And how Republicans literally started resurrecting Jim Crow *within a day* of the VRA getting gutted.

Which is funny because Republicans deliberately did redistricting that purposely diluted a *lot* of those safely red districts, thinking they were fucking over the democrats. Which ended up turning solid and safe +10 districts into very uncertain +4s and such as Trump slammed his dick in a car door

they're already clearly scared of him before they get to the hotel btw, it's wild how much this is straightforwardly a movie about domestic abuse. the scene where wendy explains to the doctor how jack injured danny and the dr just kind of looks at her, then smash cut to next scene! chef's kiss

the movie is great at constructing backstory from little hints. we get the sense that he's failed from job to job and town to town. his unhinged speech about "have you given ANY THOUGHT to MY RESPONSIBILITY" is the speech of a guy who has failed to meet his responsibilities in various dumb ways

Chatgpt is not only the exact opposite of a disability aid, not only does it *induce* the very disability its evangelists claim it helps, but this is very extremely obvious to everyone else.

Tasks multiply, each becoming a fractal blossom of subtasks that must be checked for being utter fucking nonsense and then corrected if so. And it's all random, all black box: impossible to develop a coping strategy and heuristic to deal with. Any given subtask might turn into its own clusterfuck

The aphorism really should be "if you opened the last ten doors using a sledgehammer, you won't even notice the 11th door is unlocked." It's interesting to consider the Einstellung effect and how so many terrible solutions in such a wide range of things, result from it.

Just being able to even notice you are solving a different problem, requiring a different solution, can be the hardest part of that new problem.

George Polya, in How to Solve It, discussed this effect, as he argued that the real test is not whether you have learned a solution, but whether you've learned how to *find* a solution.

In a real way, becoming an expert at solving one problem makes it objectively harder to solve even a similar kind of problem. Even if that problem is a much easier one than the one you are an expert at.

A person who solves a lot of the same kind of problem, with the same kind of solutions, will find their experience *actively working against them* when they encounter a similar-looking problem requiring a different solution.

Paradoxically, being good at solving a problem *requires* you to think less, to filter out more unnecessary information. The less thinking you have to do, the better you are at solving it.

Solve the same problem repeatedly, and you develop a very lazy algorithm to solve it. If X, do Y. And if a new problem looks similar enough to that problem, you will not notice that there is no X to Y. You'll just assume there is, and try it anyway.

This is because the better you become at solving a problem, the less you have to think to do it. You know which details to look for, what the important parts are to pay attention to, etc. You don't have to pay as much attention, or think, as you did that first time.

Basically: the new problem is seen as familiar, and they use what they learned solving previous problems, to try to solve it. Over-familiarity with the type of problem, makes it hard to notice that it is *not* the same problem.

Give them 10 logic puzzles that require a complex solution. Then give them an 11th where the solution is simple. They'll all try to do a complex solution.

Unlike the aphorism, you can test this in a lab. Have subjects solve 10 problems that requires one kind of solution. Give them an 11th problem where that solution doesn't make sense. Watch them all try that solution anyway.

There is a cool cognitive bias called the Einstellung effect. Basically: if you solve several problems the same way, the next problem you encounter you will try to solve the same way. "when all you have is a hammer," basically.

You can think of it like an anti-tool, one that actually destroys your ability to solve a problem. That actively makes it impossible to learn from solving problems how to solve new problems.

Fortunately, this is not how calculators work or are marketed. They calculate: if you know how to solve a problem, you use them to solve the problem reproducibly. They do not solve the problem unless you know how to solve the problem.

A person using this fucked up calculator will not be able to solve, or even understand, math problems. Every new problem will be just as alien and confusing and inscrutable as the last 100. No learning takes place, no experience happens.

Someone using this fucked up calculator would not only be outsourcing the calculation to a machine that can't actually calculate. But they'd also be outsourcing the actual act of problem-solving itself, to that machine.

A better analogy to calculators, a more accurate one, would be if calculators didn't actually calculate. A calculator with number inputs only and a button you press to receive an answer, no operations. Enter some numbers, get an answer. Maybe it's the same each time, maybe not.

Chatgpt users *deliberately* take a sledgehammer to the very ability to solve problems and then remember how those problems were solved in order to help solve new problems. They are inherently unable to accumulate experience, solving problems.

When "something I have done before" turns into an undifferentiated "press the bullshit button, receive slop," you miss out on *the* engine that creates expertise and mastery. Calculators don't do this. You still have to know how to solve the problem, for them to work.
