The essence of a great three star review from SD here. And why newspapers must stop insisting their reviewers pretend everything is one or five stars, for clicks. Most things are three stars. And that is always worth dissecting.

It was proven, without doubt and to massive global fanfare, that even the best chess player who ever lived could not beat a machine. Totemic, worldwide news! And then everyone immediately realised it was about as meaningful as realising no one could beat a wall at tennis, shrugged, and moved on.

...And when you present people with a job at which it's legitimately hard for them tell how good they are, they come up with bullshit self-reinforcing metrics. "I never hire people wearing blue shirts. How effective is that? Well, look around the place; do you see anyone in a blue shirt?"

"refusing to date bi people is based in bigotry" "um excuse me it's just PERSONAL CHOICE, you are trying to VIOLATE CONSENT here" "OK, what's that personal choice based on?" "my many bigoted opinions about bi people! what is so hard to understand here??"

So - the US President is stating, for the world to hear, that it is the USA who is blocking the world’s trade in oil and other goods? Is that what he’s admitting? 🧐

Like, we've always had robber-barons, but they used to be sufficiently scared for their posterity that they balmed all of the graft, corruption, and dead workers by splashing money on public goods.

longtermism is so repugnant that I hesitate to address it on its own terms but: on its own terms this shit is clearly wrong. the best way *now* to encourage a happy future for umptillion beings who use technology we can't imagine is to make the current world more just for everyone.

Okay so @defector.com has had an odd glitch since the site redesign a couple of weeks back where the wrong photo and headline are often put together on the main page and I was going to ask them about fixing it but this just happened and as far as I'm concerned they have to leave it as is.
Screenshot for a Defector podcast episode with the headline "Consider the Emotional Lives of Scallops" only the accompanying photo is a white gormless stubbled red-headed UK singer of recent notoriety giving a flat smile to the camera while wearing a washed out peach top as beige as he is against a flat background. So, actually, probably a scallop anyway.

The Tommy Robinson endorsement thing is funny because Ed Sheeran clearly doesn’t actually give a fuck about either Israel or Palestine, he just wanted to be left alone with his piles of money. And now the fash want to be friends. So much for trying to stay apolitical!
