~800,000 years ago, a giant straight-tusked elephant, Palaeoloxodon antiquus, roamed Europe. It was about twice the size of a modern African elephant: 4 m (13 ft) at the shoulder, weighing ~13 tons. This story is NOT about these towering titans. It's about their ᴛɪɴʏ cousins. (📷: Liam Elward)
A life sized recreation next to a standard waving human silhouette, showing Palaeoxloxodon namadicus, which was slightly larger than Paleoloxodon antiquus but probably didn't enter Europe, being specific to India and parts of Asia.

when ai leaves u behind
7 panel comic.

Panel 1:
A Red Guy with AI across his chest looks like he’s about to run away. A Yellow Guy stands next to him. Red Guy says “I’m the future, buddy. You comin’?”
Yellow Guy replies “Nah”

Panel 2:
Red Guy is almost out of the panel. He leans in and says “Enjoy getting left behind, pal”
Yellow Guy replies “ok”

Panel 3:
Yellow Guy stands alone.

Panel 4:
Close up on Yellow Guy, there is a quiet “huff-huff-huff” noise coming from behind him

Panel 5:
Yellow Guy turns to look behind him

Panel 6:
Close up on Yellow Guy’s face as if from the point of view of an attacker.
Yellow Guy yells “Jesus Christ”

Panel 7:
AI Red Guy is now chasing the Yellow Guy.
Red Guy: “Use me”
Yellow Guy “No”
Red Guy “USE ME”

I’ve often said (partly tongue in cheek) that spite can be a great motivator. But mudita (freudenfeude), the ability to be truly happy for others’ success, can be a much more reliable way to have a fulfilling career. Even if it can seem that way, science is not a zero sum game. Play the long game.

I know getting AI to write your paper is bad. But if you are writing in a non naive language, is it acceptable to ask it to tidy your text? I think it should be. Reviewing a paper where the language is a big barrier to communication is painful to reviewer and author alike.

"Student's t-test" was developed by William Sealy Gosset, English chemist & head brewer at Guinness Brewery. He developed statistical methods under pseudonym "Student": t test, z distribution. He looks... exactly like you'd think the person who invented the t-test would look. *Significantly* so.
William Sealy Gosset is seated and photographed from the chest up. he has narrow-set eyes with small oval glasses and a very neat haircut. He wears a warm-looking three piece suit with light colored shirt and tie. His mustache is full but well-trimmed.

He looks like... an accountant stereotype? One that collects antique tea-cups, and like to read Western novels.
