Highly recommend visiting poster 8448F at #ASHG26. Talking to Jeffrey about both single cell and bulk eQTL mapping methods is often a highlight of my week.

This makes me angry. UK policy on foreign students is wrong because it is racist and corrodes our society. It's also plain stupid: it is wrecking a major UK export industry that provides jobs, growth and innovation for our country.

~800,000 years ago, a giant straight-tusked elephant, Palaeoloxodon antiquus, roamed Europe. It was about twice the size of a modern African elephant: 4 m (13 ft) at the shoulder, weighing ~13 tons. This story is NOT about these towering titans. It's about their ᴛɪɴʏ cousins. (📷: Liam Elward)
A life sized recreation next to a standard waving human silhouette, showing Palaeoxloxodon namadicus, which was slightly larger than Paleoloxodon antiquus but probably didn't enter Europe, being specific to India and parts of Asia.

when ai leaves u behind
7 panel comic.

Panel 1:
A Red Guy with AI across his chest looks like he’s about to run away. A Yellow Guy stands next to him. Red Guy says “I’m the future, buddy. You comin’?”
Yellow Guy replies “Nah”

Panel 2:
Red Guy is almost out of the panel. He leans in and says “Enjoy getting left behind, pal”
Yellow Guy replies “ok”

Panel 3:
Yellow Guy stands alone.

Panel 4:
Close up on Yellow Guy, there is a quiet “huff-huff-huff” noise coming from behind him

Panel 5:
Yellow Guy turns to look behind him

Panel 6:
Close up on Yellow Guy’s face as if from the point of view of an attacker.
Yellow Guy yells “Jesus Christ”

Panel 7:
AI Red Guy is now chasing the Yellow Guy.
Red Guy: “Use me”
Yellow Guy “No”
Red Guy “USE ME”

Kid's friend needs to do a sport regularly for his GCSE in PE. But the volleyball club he has been attending costs £145 for the year. The coach previously waived it for him but can't afford to this year and his parents can't afford it. Teens don't have same space to learn independence as we had.

I’ve often said (partly tongue in cheek) that spite can be a great motivator. But mudita (freudenfeude), the ability to be truly happy for others’ success, can be a much more reliable way to have a fulfilling career. Even if it can seem that way, science is not a zero sum game. Play the long game.

Or - scary thought - this is a natural facet of human? I think society works best when people are reliant on each other. We lift each other up, catch when we fall etc. Together, we are more than the sum of our parts. But when you feel you don't need anyone, do you also stop caring to lift others?

Well that's just silly. These days people's names do not determine their native language, and scientists above everyone should understand that! Though I have been told this too despite being a native speaker when co authoring with someone with a non western name.

Chris Wallace @chr1sw.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
I know getting AI to write your paper is bad. But if you are writing in a non naive language, is it acceptable to ask it to tidy your text? I think it should be. Reviewing a paper where the language is a big barrier to communication is painful to reviewer and author alike.

I recall the interview ~10 years ago, when a candidate for a PhD was remote, took a long pause after being asked to define a gene, then started reading from the Wikipedia page! Before video calls, so we were interviewing by phone. At least now you have the eyes as a clue.
