I want my country back. By that, I mean a country where I would be confident that a thug who livestreamed himself stabbing an RNLI dingy on an active operation would a) Be universally condemned b) Be swiftly arrested, put on trial and if found guilty, face many years in jail. I miss that country.

I think it's absolutely mad that today there's a *national news story* about 400 oil platform workers losing their jobs, and the government being blamed. 25% of the UK TV industry lost their jobs in the last 4 years and we never hear a peep about it! Some jobs are 'real jobs' I guess.

I am continuing to make friends in "AI in the workplace" sessions (image duplicated for alt text)
Hello folks. Unfortunately I am unable to attend this, but I do have a couple of thoughts/questions that I would appreciate being addressed in the Q&A, as I plan to watch the recording at a later date.

I am worried about how over-reliance on LLMs/GenAi can lead to 'de-skilling', where people become reliant on these tools and eventually lose the skills that were part of daily life a couple of years ago. There have been studies/various reports on this, e.g, https://thenextweb.com/news/wharton-cognitive-surrender-ai-chatbots-decisions-moot-app
"Wharton researchers coined ‘cognitive surrender’ to describe what happens when people let AI think for them" (paper for above here: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=6097646 - Thinking—Fast, Slow, and Artificial: How AI is Reshaping Human Reasoning and the Rise of Cognitive Surrender), and https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c2023l60370o
"Instant AI answers can trivialise human intelligence, warns Royal Observatory".

One particular worry I have is that, if staff are encouraged to rely on chatbots/LLMs to draft emails, summarise documents, etc (work that staff have been doing themselves for years), there may come a point in the future where these tools become unusable, either due to dramatically increasing costs, or the bursting of the AI bubble. Are there any plans for re-skilling staff in cases where these skills have been lost? The friction that comes from reading and digesting a complex document, or drafting a challenging email, is a vital part to maintaining these skills, and being better at it the next time round.

On a personal note, I am an autistic man with ADHD, and I bristle at the notion that these are "accessibility" tools. Historically, no tool developed to help disabled people has been pushed this hard, or has had this much money behind it. For me, using these tools to eg draft emails or digest documents would rob me of my voice and insight that I have developed over a long career of producing work to a high standard.

I have other concerns, particularly the energy costs of these tools, and the danger of using GenAI to produce "work", and rob themselves of that they are paying for, but I would very much like to hear people's thoughts on the de-skilling issue mentioned above. Many thanks.

Yes, AI has a fair chance of causing a civilizational catastrophe. Obviously. Look at the resource consumption and carbon emissions from the industry when we're teetering on the brink of disaster already. We don't need to speculate about superintelligences. The catastrophe is already unfolding.

I think the worst part of Labour's response to the fascist mobilisation is Andy Burnham's absence. He's the most popular politician in the country, with social media reach and actual powers of persuasion, and he's saying nothing in public. He can actually be of use here but he's choosing not to
