I'm not sure it has sunk in for people just how close we came to a hundred-plus Israelis crashing into the Jordanian desert in a giant fireball. Which, aside from being horrible in itself, would most likely have meant a very bad time for a lot of other people in the Middle East.

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

I’m intensely suspicious of anyone who claims to identify the event or person who “set us on the path” to where we are now (the Bad Place). It’s not a model of history I recognise and I’ve seen too many candidates to believe any one of them was uniquely decisive.

Do we really want growth that trashes the environment or adds to the problems of inequality and exclusion? Perhaps, just perhaps, endless deregulation isn’t the way forward. No prizes for guessing the author.
The telling phrase in Burnham's speech was "good growth". Notice that qualifier, for there are two decades of national economic decline contained within it. A country that has underperformed since the financial crash is open to growth - how gracious of us - as long as it is not distasteful or unjust in some ill-defined sense.
The growth must also touch "every postcode", as if that ever happens anywhere. The hauteur, the almost regal choosiness, is majestic. And they say that Britain has lost its pride.

I have policy criticisms (they're not hard to guess) but Burnham is, so far, obviously good at politics. Successfully selling an idea everyone said was politically toxic is one example. Rebooting a failing government another. Making an impressive speech another. Almost the anti-Starmer on that level

It really gives the game away when the anti trans orgs are calling the election of the neo nazi party in Germany a "glimmer of hope."
A screenshot of an online article headline from "Inspecting Gender" by Genspect. The main heading reads: "Germany: A Glimmer of Hope for Sex Realists?" Below the title, the summary text asks: "Is the victory of the AfD in Germany a dark day for democracy or a glimmer of hope for sex realists? By David Allison." The bottom metadata displays the Genspect logo, "5 hours ago," and a "Listen" audio option button. In the top right corner, there is a teal "Subscribe" button alongside a circular profile avatar.

I really weary of how UK reporters are tiptoeing around the fact that the US president talked absolute shit about the RAF Fairford incident and arrests. "It's possible Trump was talking off the cuff" - no, it's in fact very clear that Trump was just lying compulsively because that's what he does.

For all that it's been barely reported in the UK press, it's still hard to understate the importance of the stance @labourunionsuk.bsky.social has taken on trans and non-binary rights this week. Every single trade union affiliated to the party of government has stood up and said we will not comply.
Joint statement from National TULO

Solidarity with the trans and non-binary community

Labour's 11 affiliated trade unions stand in total solidarity with the trans and non-binary community.

Trans rights are human rights, and trans rights are workers' rights.

We in the trade union movement will do all we can to stand up for our trans members and all our trans siblings, to protect them from persecution, harassment and attack.

The government must act now to protect all trans people, to make sure their rights are protected, expanded and upheld in our workplaces and communities.
