On the other hand, it's interesting when someone gets rediscovered. The music of JS Bach fell into obscurity almost as soon as he died; Mendelssohn made him well-known again

Civilian faculty also provide something a heavily rotational military faculty model struggles to replicate: long-duration disciplinary expertise and institutional memory. Uniformed faculty rotate. Career academics can spend decades building departments, curricula, research programs, and expertise.

With my former service academy asst prof hat on, the more interesting question here isn’t academic tenure. It’s force generation. The service academies aren’t merely universities. They’re statutory officer-accession pipelines that produce commissioned officers with multi-year service obligations.

The unfortunate thing about Paul Kennedy (and every other person in international relations not named Francis Fukuyama) is that they were writing in the late 1980s. Kennedy also thought the Soviet Union would continue into the 2020s, but then again so did the CIA.

If Trump started injecting every immigrant with bubonic plague, the Supreme Court would rule that while they take a year or two to decide if it's constitutional, the program should go forward because to not let Trump inject people with bubonic plague would do irreparable harm to the government

Seems like some version of this runs every day
Like many of her neighbors, Ms. Vuittonet had been worried about the streams of new immigrants coming across the Rio Grande during the Biden administration and had trusted that Mr. Trump would stop them. Although some Trump supporters held signs calling for "mass deportations now" during the 2024 campaign, Ms. Vuittonet never thought such deportations would include people she knew who had lived in the United States for decades.
"I knew that he was going to start deporting people, but that he was going to go after bad criminals, like true hardcore criminals, rapists, killers," Ms. Vuittonet said, sitting in the small coffee shop she runs from the back of an antique store.
She thought of her six children, who range from ages 6 to 12. "Of course I want the streets safe."
But when her brother was taken to an immigration detention center earlier this year, just days after a scheduled check-in with an immigration official, she said it felt like a punch to the gut.

Quite a remarkable map, table, and diagram from a 1971 report on launch-on-warning, showing the implications of Soviet submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) on detection, reaction, deliberation, and response time. All numbers are in SECONDS, which is what I find the most wild about it.
Map of the USA labeled "Soviet SLBM [Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile] Time of Flight to SAC [Strategic Air Command] Targets." Shows both "nominal" and "depressed" trajectories. Absolute best (north central USA) is between 580 and 850 seconds (9.6 – 14 min). Absolute worst (everywhere else) is between 320 and 650 seconds (5.3 – 10.8 min). The variations are based on where they assume the subs are launching from. Table: "Early Warning System Performance." Shows four different systems (BMEWS, OTHF, SLBM Net, and a not-yet-operational in 1971 Boost-Phase Detection Satellite) that indicates the time of detection after launch (varies between 55 and 150 seconds; BMEWS cannot detect launches as it is only over-the-horizon radar), the time that the US command and control system would be alerted after launch (ranges from 85 seconds for the newest system to 900 seconds for BMEWs), the probably of detection of a single launch (BMEWS is 99%, SLBM Net is 50%, none of the others have probabilities), probably of detection for a mass launch (all around 100%), and their false alarm rate (BMEWS has 1 per 7 years, OTHF is 1 per 6 months, the others are unknown). Diagram: "National Command-Warning to Response Cycle." Shows the consequences of a launch detection all the way through the US nuclear infrastructure, with "delay times" in seconds. Will be discussed in the next post in this thread.

Because they are no longer really hiding. I actually wonder of the damage they were able to cause at Sevare, because it's apparent that something is missing in the air. Jihadists are camping in locations they should not and bombing facilities they used to harass but not besiege.

Niger is in panic - not only the Islamic State is on the visible rise everywhere, they also got a huge amount of $ for American and European hostages released recently. How much? We don't know. But certainly massive. Not the scale of UAE prince JNIM kidnapped, but of note still.

But as you all know, and I may be boring with it I admit, it's absolutely imperative to not take away agency of decision making from any of them. Islamic State bombs the hell out of Niger, pushing the state into desperation. 40-50 killed this week, hundred over a month.

US withdrawal from Iraq was scheduled a few years in advance. But with Iran hitting US bases there, and Iran-allied Iraqi militias launching drones at Saudi Arabia, the withdrawal looks—to everyone in the region, and the wider world—like the US under fire ceding more of the Middle East to Iran.

This is an underrated point, I think. It’s been asymmetrically distributed across the federal workforce but places like the FBI, they’ve fired people simply for doing the jobs assigned to them, when they happen to be redressing Republican wrongdoing. One of the most corrosive things of all this.
