For every executed client we had, just before the date we'd hear all sorts of ways that "normal" people would kill our clients. And they were usually the same people who scoffed at mitigation because they suffered "similar" stuff and turned out "fine." I disagreed with their self assessment.

My son's huge corporate employer won't give him health care, or even the hours to qualify to pay for it himself, but they did hand out nice cancer awareness ribbons to attach to his uniform to support his coworker with cancer. So they got that going for them. Which is worthless.

Opinion | Tennessee botched its attempted execution of Christa Pike. It shouldn’t try again.
John Pfaff: Gov. Bill Lee can do what the Supreme Court will not — and prevent a punishment that already feels morally cruel and unusual.

Statement from Christa Pike's attorneys Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason from the TN
Office of the Post Conviction Defender, and Stephen Ferrell and Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee
Tonight the State of Tennessee once again failed to carry out a lawful execution. We take no pleasure in being right, but the concerns raised by Ms. Pike proved to be true: difficult vein access, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital, no emergency medical care available when things inevitably go wrong, all under a protocol that remains veiled in secrecy.
Christa is being treated at a nearby hospital. We have not been informed as to her condition.

The lone woman on Tennessee's death row was still alive after she was administered two lethal injections, her lawyer said in a motion seeking to halt her execution Wednesday night, a stunning development after the Supreme Court had stepped in to allow the state to put her to death.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said
"executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said in a federal court filing.
They said Pike "has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat," and that curtains to the death chamber "have gone down twice."
