if you begin feminist history at #MeToo then it's easy to despair that nothing has changed (or that some things have actually gotten worse). if you take a much longer view though things have changed so much! the little gestures we make today are adding up to something we can't see yet!

Every time a discourse kicks off over whether AI music, literature or art will be "as good as" the real thing, I'm always amazed more people don't cite that **there already are** creative pursuits where human-free spectacles have been available for decades, and nobody has ever wanted to watch them.

Very unclear what this is, because the U.S. military…already has a robust chaplaincy corps? This has been true literally since the U.S. military was created 251 years ago — technically, before the U.S. even declared independence?

Anyone who says something is a false flag has to specify what the purpose of said false flag would be. “Israel launched a false flag on that plane.” To do what? Bomb the Palestinians? Start a war with Iran? Mossad would have to be pretty lazy to put it off until now.

It's worth noting that this story is getting a lot of coverage *because* serious crashes between cyclists and pedestrians are so rare (also the aspect of it happening near BU). Yet, the regular, often fatal, crashes where drivers hit pedestrians rarely get this much attention.

I'm glad this woman is going to survive, but there's a frustrating quote from a witness about the cyclist "not being in the bike lane" as if that's some damning detail. There are many reasons why a cyclist wouldn't be in the bike lane! Cyclists get none of the grace drivers do.

A big downside of the top AI guys being deeply influenced by sci-fi is that they don't realize that giving non-organic characters personalities is a narrative requirement and not much more. If Marvin was just an android and not the paranoid android, he would be boring.

Several people are mad about this so I will briefly clarify! No, I’m not saying a novel is comparable to a real-life assault in any way. No, I’m not saying the author is bad or responsible for bad things. I am saying I’ve seen real bad stuff come from “consensual” student-faculty relationships.

To give you an idea of how distasteful this is, I know multiple people who've either changed programs or quit academia altogether because they were sexually harassed and the institution in question did nothing about it.

For LOTS OF REASONS I don’t think it is ever okay for a professor to date a student in their own department. It’s an obvious power imbalance and potentially disastrous for the student’s education and career. So it is real jarring and not fun to see it portrayed as a cute happy romance in a novel!

As @gilmored85.bsky.social said the Minnesota Senate race has only had one nonpartisan poll the entire cycle with like 12% undecided (pretty useless). The rest have been R-leading pollsters finding a narrow lead for Flanagan. There's been no rush to investment in the state. It's probably nothing.

Here's the key thing to remember about dumb mascots: What the people behind them care about is that you remember who they're a mascot FOR. The hatred for a feathered meatball fades, but you'll remember the company, and that's what matters.

Fundamentally Jews being safe in NYC has *nothing inherently to do* with Palestine. Israel's genocide of Palestinians is a contributing factor to the rise in antisemitism, but that could end and there would still be antisemitic violence and harassment. Gotta disentangle them.

just learned that one of the three women who coined the term “sexual harassment” was Lin Farley of CORNELL - she observed a pattern of women quitting their jobs due to unwanted sexual attention
Massachusetts in the early 1970s. citation needed! At Cornell University, instructor Lin Farley discovered that women in a discussion group repeatedly described being fired or quitting a job because they were harassed and intimidated by men. 141 She and colleagues used the term "sexual harassment" to describe the problem and generate interest in a "Speak Out" event in May
1975. She later described sexual harassment at length in
1975 testimony before the New York City Human Rights Commission. 15! [16. In the book In Our Time: Memoir of a Revolution (1999), journalist Susan Brownmiller says the women at Cornell became public activists after being asked for help by Carmita Dickerson Wood, a 44-year-old single mother who was being harassed by a faculty member at Cornell's Department of Nuclear Physics.|'71 [181 [19]
These activists, Lin Farley, Susan Meyer, and Karen Sauvigne, went on to form Working Women United, which, along with the Alliance Against Sexual Coercion (founded in 1976 by Freada Klein, Lynn Wehrli, and Elizabeth Cohn-Stuntz), was among the pioneer organizations to bring sexual harassment to public attention in the late 1970s. 20! Farley also wrote a book
