Watching the new series of Mock the Week, and for some reason, I just felt a little twinge of happiness noticing that Mykola Pawluk is still working. One of those names that seems to have been around forever.

I try not to indulge in the GenX "that was how long ago?", but being roughly as far away from Look Around You as the stuff it was parodying gives one pause.

Judi Dench on working with Frances Barber
As for Frankie's gift ... The play, among other things, is a discussion about unconventional sexual acts and so Frankie Barber, as a first-night present, bought me a double-ended dildo. It was about two metres long and all bendy - you could wear it as a scarf, which I did once when the company gathered for director's notes. But I had no idea where to keep it. I couldn't take it home, where my young grandson often came to stay, so in the end I hung it over Diana Rigg's portrait in my dressing room. My reasoning being that any visitors would be so arrested by the beautiful image of Diana, they wouldn't notice this massive penis dangling down each side of the frame.
But then one day I knew the cleaner had spotted it because when I arrived in my dressing room for that evening's performance, it was coiled up on my make-up table like a Cumberland sausage.

Overheard train chat between two tough-looking youths: Youth one: “I got déjà vu, man. I saw this dog and felt like I’d seen it before.” Youth two: “That’s not déjà vu. You just saw a dog twice.”

What a fortnight in British politics. Also love the idea that someone mounting a coup to overthrow the third biggest party's leader goes completely unnoticed until it's an exclusive splash in the FT

Happy 90th Birthday to the one and only Brian Blessed! I wrote a book for children called 'Wed Wabbit', and based the Green Wimbley Woos (you'll just have to read it) on Mr Blessed. They're freedom-fighting commandos who inadvertently give away all their plans because they CANNOT WHISPER.

This is a good example of why I am not a fan of the pivot to podcasts/audio articles. It says it takes 6 minutes to read (actually about 3 mins max), but 9 minutes to listen to. Audio is just such a SLOW way to consume words.

The five habits of highly successful opposition leaders:
1 Get a popular leader, or at least one who is less unpopular than their rivals.
2 Move towards the party that defeated you.
There is usually a reason why voters picked it, which should give you a clue about what direction you need to move in.
Neutralise your areas of weakness. In our country, for the Tories that typically requires that they minimise fears that they will knacker public services; for Labour that generally requires it to minimise fears that it will spend like a drunk in a casino.
4 Convince voters that you are competent and that you've changed.
5 Form a viable programme for government.

MRIs are typically 40 mins or so. Do push for an open MRI as it’ll be the only way you’ll be able to tolerate it. We had to go to a Harley St clinic, so you may need to travel outside of your local hospital. Good luck with it x

John went to the normal MRI and refused it due to his claustrophobia (I didn’t blame him). He got referred for an open MRI machine, which helped.

RIP Jeffrey Archer, not a day goes by when I don't think about the judge in his 1987 libel case (which Archer "won" by doing a bunch of perjury) summing up for the jury by going "would a guilty man have such a hot wife". one of the most insane legal moments of all time

Just watched the pilot of Mork & Mindy for I think the first time, and Pam Dawber really is amazing in it. She manages to ground the show without being dull, hold her own against Williams' nonsense, and plays her wide-eyed delight in meeting Mork perfectly.

It's vaguely weird that the BBC statement says "the cheeky canine gets his own show", when he a) had Hacker Time for years, and b) they were full half hour shows, not, erm, four minutes. I am, of course, still pleased about this.

Me and Jeffrey Archer, as I try to earwig his conversation after he was let out of jail to attend his Mum's funeral. They milked as much publicity out of it as they possibly could, it was a very odd day.
