'Roofs, High Holborn.' (1937) Lily Joseph's view was painted from her studio in Bedford Row looking towards the Old Bailey. Her palette was almost exclusively of white, cobalt, rose madder and the rare orange madder. In her day, Lily was a noted Suffragette.

Read this (his autobiography) & kind of wish I hadn’t. There’s a bit of an air of ‘will this do?’ about it & although I understand that he’s examining what made him a writer, I’d have liked to know a bit more about his wife than that she was a Catholic. Her *name*, for a start.

Only known this author previously from the brilliant 'Fireweed' (written for older children) but I've just read this Booker shortlisted novel & been knocked sideways: set on a Mediterranean island in the late middle ages, it's a propulsive & complex story, exquisitely written.
