Second Patrick McGoohan contemporary musical adaptation of Othello *in which Iago plays the drums*

I disagree. It's not good, but it's interesting, sometimes nicely photographed and so of its time in a weirdly culty and funky way. Mind you, I've watched The Apple several times and will so again.

Watching Catch My Soul, the second and less-good updating of Othello as a contemporary musical involving Patrick McGoohan. This one was considered lost media for decades and it should never have been found.

Movies Silently @moviessilently.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Silent films were sniffed at in film circles and by the generation immediately succeeding them and that attitude bleeds through to some old movie fans, who are sometimes surprisingly resistant to the silents. Ironically, I sometimes have better success with non-film nerds.

I'm listening to Harpers Bizarre. I need to be careful not to do it for too long, otherwise if anything I listen to afterwards is even moderately rocking, it sounds like four different Motorhead records being played at once.

Shocked, nay stunned, to discover that Clive Dunn's 1970s novelty number one hit "Grandad" actually merited a Japanese 7" single release.
Japanese cover art for Clive Dunn's "Grandad"showing Dunn in Dad's Army military attire holding a gun in one hand, standing to attention next to some kind of hewn stone monument, possibly a gravestone. The song title is rendered in katakana in a curiously artistic font, as is the name of the B-side. Other Japanese script informs potential local purchasers that the disc is a British number one hit.

What gets me is the "doth" (as well as the crap art that looks nothing like the actual tapestry). The text on the actual Bayeaux Tapestry is in Latin. If you're going to do your pastiche in English, then do it in actual modern English, not Early Modern English of some 600 years later.

Even I'm getting sick of the generational cohort talk. Me, against whom you only have to brush lightly to provoke me into saying many of the classic 20th century British sitcoms are expressions of Silent Generation pain and confusion.

The choice to feature six deaths was deliberate as Disney execs expressed a desire that Avengers: Doomsday be "at least six times better than Last of the Summer Wine: Getting Sam Home".
Screencap of the BuzzCrave post which reads: "Avengers Doomsday reportedly has at least six major deaths. It's described as one of the darkest movies ever made."

That's Life may be unique among factual TV shows in getting more baroque as the years progressed, going from gas board complaints plus musical numbers to wacky songs about postcodes followed by children with lukemia, then Doc Cox forcing people in a garden centre to sing The Sun Has Got His Hat On.

Because I guess to certain eyes, what’s the difference, it’s all the BBC, right? The actual department doesn’t matter. But, of course, it does matter. Because it’s vital for the show to be essentially harmless factual entertainment fluff, before it goes batshit on you.

Letterboxd have just published an official list that describes Ghostwatch as “framed as a real BBC News production”, and it reminds me of how much you can easily get wrong if you’re writing something which is just slightly adjacent to your expertise.

This is not helping as I've been having my constant loop of thoughts of making Batman's themes fit our times. Thoughts I must keep to myself until I, a man in his 50s with no previous comic or film experience, am made editor of the comics or director of a movie tetralogy.

Great moments in Scottish engineering history: James Watt tries to work out how his phone attaches to his selfie stick.
Statue of James Watt. In his right hand he holds a telescopic stick with a frame at the top; in his left he holds a flat object about the size of a large smartphone. He is scowling at the possibly-not-a-smartphone as if he is tempted to yeet it into the sea. On that basis, it probably _is_ a phone.

You can’t understand the story of rock music without following the main and side plots together. For example, I don’t even WANT to know about Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart without the proper context of the accompanying episodes on the GTOs and The Banana Splits. That’s how good this is.
