our laziness is what allows us as humans to say no, and this helps us push back against complexity @bcantrill.bsky.social #monktoberfest
A slide that says:

The virtue of laziness
• Our need to comprehend and compose systems drives us towards developing simple, powerful abstractions
• This is our drive to cognitive efficiency in a system - what Larry Wall famously called the programmer virtue of laziness
• LLMs lack the virtue of laziness - they are biased to the complex
• Moreover, their limited context makes them tautologically emergent..

Earlier this evening, I was chatting with Nat Barmore, my co-designer on Dread, and he dug up a 27 year old file containing the original dice mechanics for the game. These were to be used alongside the Jenga tower and we never played with them. We just never needed them.

Mousetrap has numerous inspirations. Mini-games come from Firebrands-style games with permission from @lumpley.bsky.social & @megueyb.bsky.social. Art derives from John Austen’s Hamlet (1922), and the game is nothing without Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Christie’s The Mousetrap, and Tom Stoppard’s plays.

Vincent is being very smart and correct in this thread, and this a good baseline call to action, but my own call to action is to tell them “Depends on the game! Here’s how this specific PbtA game works, other PbtA games work different ways sometimes.” (Tbh you can substitute OSR, larp, etc for PbtA)

Being a billionaire must be insane. You can buy new teeth, new skin. All your chairs cost 20,000 dollars and weigh 2,000 pounds. Your life is just a series of your own preferences. In terms of cognitive impairment it's probably like being kicked in the head by a horse every day

Totally. I also think treating this as a binary can make it harder to notice/appreciate the different ways different groups approach things like player roles and "authority" for a given game.

The split between player/GM and GM'd/GMless hurts our understanding of player roles in ttrpgs, and our design. They are false binaries that we sort games into based on what "feels right," without actually being very useful terms for understanding dynamics in play beyond a base level.

The fact of the matter is that if we don't want people resorting to asking LLMs to solve their coding problems for them, we as a community have gotta get a LOT more willing to field questions whose answers we regard as painfully obvious.

They introduced the 'sexism snake' where wherever one of them made a sexist comment or joke, the others would just start hissing. Didn't need to get into an argument about it, just hissing.

It's okay to hit "rewind" on occasion and have a do-over; yes consequences are part of (most) games, but "having fun" (in all its permutations) is usually a bigger part. It's not cheating to say, "That/we kind of sucked, can we try it again?" Ask yourself "Why am I playing this?" to figure it out.

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

It is definitely interesting to read 80s-era "pre-isekai" novels aimed at adults and see a lot of the same dynamics as modern isekai, it feels like they've really fallen out of the genre reader awareness compared to more children-aimed portal fantasy.
