A river with an arched brick footbridge, and green trees along the banks with leaves just beginning to turn to orange & gold are reflected in the still water.

I always ask if people think hearing a digital piano programmed to play a concerto is the same as hearing my dad — who’s been playing for 79 years and still practices hours a day — do it. And funnily enough no one has ever agreed that it is.

Yesterday, he called me to his boat brandishing a whitefish, extolling their virtues. I had to dissuade him from putting it in my kayak, so he promised if I came back today there would be cleaned fish waiting in the back of his truck. I found them this morning. I need to have people for dinner. 2/2
Two whole, cleaned and headless whitefish in plastic. A pound of pickerel (walleye) fillets in plastic.

The fisherman in this boat is 95 years old. We've known each other off and on for years, and reconnected a few weeks ago when he came out of the fog in front of me while I was kayaking along the cliffs. Bob is full of wisdom, stories, and strong opinions and is a strong voice for lake Winnipeg. 1/2
A lone fisherman in a red jacket stands at the bow of 20-ish foot yawl with a large, black outboard motor. He's working his net in the dim blue light of pre-dawn as a small squadron of white pelicans wait behind the boat for scraps.

Communal aspect is important too. It's often remarked that an artist needs an audience to complement and complete the art, and now it's just as valid to say that an audience needs an artist to do the same. Either of these roles, if replaced by AI, loses its potency.

Those arguing for mass-adoption of AI art always seem intent on proving the wrong thing; that AI tech will change beyond all recognition. They seem less inclined to prove their argument's much wilder claim; that human nature, and all previous modes of taste, emotion and investment, will change too.

It's easy - and correct! - to focus on just how ghoulish and profane this view of human creativity is. But even if you're the most cynical capitalist on earth, the evidence that people would enjoy entirely dehumanised content, at anything like a scale that would justify this hype, is extremely thin!

We've had the ability to watch, say, Counterstrike marathons, Street Fighter tournaments, or chess matches between computers since the 90s. Spectacles which, by their very definition, would be at a "higher standard" than human play. And nobody wants it. It's entirely meaningless. It has no appeal.

Since the collective noun for a group of crows is a murder, would it be right to call this group of crows looking for grubs a murder investigation? At UBC, Vancouver, BC, Canada #Birds #Crows #Humor #NaturePhotography
Photo of about forty crows searching for grubs in a series of grassy areas bisected by a path, a driveway, a separated two lane boulevard, all of which cross the picture horizontally. At the right of the picture is a trimmed cedar hedge. In the background are more hedges, some low fences, and leafy trees. At the left of the picture are number of posts with signs for parking restrictions, indicating a bicycle path, and a pair of stop signs.

Before Portal, there was, well, Portal. Activision's 1986 'computer novel' is one of the examples of the kind of entertainment software being developed for the Commodore Amiga in its first year. High concept, artsy, and tapping into the creativity-focused marketing for the computer.
A scan of the box from Mobygames, with an almost completely glossy black cover and the worlds PORTAL and the computer novel tagline at the top. Ghost-like faces can be seen at the bottom of the cover. In the upper centre: an evocative premise.

Homer, A Biological Computer. The Final Link to the Past and the Only Conduit to the Future. But Homer is dying and access grows weaker moment by moment. Will you discover where everyone has gone or will to the doorway to humanity close forever, leaving you totally alone?
