a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

Every fall, year after year, my colleagues & I give the same interviews on the reality of sexual violence on campuses. In *2007*, I co-founded a group at Carleton that spent 7 years (!!) fighting to get a sexual assault centre on campus. (We won) Time is a flat circle under rape culture.

Whenever a woman complains online, inevitably two things will happen: A man will comment something supportive, followed by another man responding "Give it up, bro. She's not gonna fuck you!" Proving in the clearest possible terms how men are socialized to only be nice to women in exchange for sex.

Can confirm. I spoke at a conference recently, where the person before me talked about AI. I started my keynote by saying that AI is incompatible with feminism because AI is built on theft and therefore a consent violation. "Gen-AI stole my book. AI is harmful to real people like me." It hit hard.

Do men realize that since the Cornell story dropped, I have gotten countless messages from women telling me that if rape culture ended tomorrow, they would finally be free to be the freaky sluts they've always wanted to be? Men live in a prison and yet are the only ones that hold the key.

I've been working to end sexual violence for 20+ years and I have never, ever, not once, had a male survivor tell me they were offended by my work or felt excluded by my work. The "What about men?!" crowd does not actually care about boys and men who've been sexually assaulted.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Thissss is what folks keep missing. RJ literally does not work if the person who committed harm won't earnestly cop to it. Hell, in my own memoir, I include a copy of an email of my boyfriend sent me after he raped me and it was not the first time he raped me nor was it the last.

We absolutely have the ability to do both and we must! There is no silver bullet to addressing rape culture. We need early interventions with boys, bystander education, *and* effective self-defense. I literally teach all three so I am totally on team "Attack rape culture from every angle"

The two places where adult men experience the highest rates of sexual assault are in the military and while incarcerated. That fact alone proves that sexual assault is about power, domination and humiliation. It's about making someone "your bitch" - proving the inherent misogyny involved.

100% endorse this thread. I teach consent, violence prevention & bystander intervention for a living - It is my area of expertise. There is *no* evidence of the existence of an "Oops, my bad!" rapist. "Sexual assault is a miscommunication" is a myth without any evidence. It is an intentional act.
