As others have said, this is an example of a certifiably bad move or bad GM call, but I think it’s worth delving into why this example feels so relatable and pervasive. Because though you can pretty easily point out how this is against the rules and principles of PBTA, it’s also pretty common.

What’s fun about playing MTG with my brother and nephew is that they’re using pre-built Marvel decks with very specific mechanics. Meanwhile I’m using a hodgepodge of sets. So I’ll be like, “I’m going to spend 2 mana to exile this card facedown and I promise that’s something I can do.”

It’s so funny that multiple companies went in on VR as, like, the future of corporate workplace instead of a niche video game gadget. It’s like if Microsoft watched The Wizard and was like, “This is the future of workplace productivity.”
Still from The Wizard featuring a character wearing the Power Glove, an extremely unwieldy and terrible controller

There’s a great moment in Steven Universe Future where Greg shows Steven the song that changed his life, that made him want to be Greg Universe, and it just means absolutely nothing to Steven. It says a lot how the art that affects us is, a lot of times, based on the circumstances we experience it.

Picked up Supergirl: World of Tomorrow today. I liked the Supergirl movie, but this is something else. Gorgeous art mixed with such melancholy. Still, I have sympathy for the writers. Adapting a story largely about witnessing genocide for a big budget audience is quite the task.

My wife and I have been slowly working our way through Orbitals, and it’s been a real joy. The game is gorgeous, the characters are fun, and we’ve really been enjoying the puzzles and gameplay. Still got more to go but it’s been an A+ so far.

Interesting RPG situation at Books-A-Million. There’s rulebooks for Pathfinder, Invincible, Daggerheart, and more. But you know what’s not here? The Player’s Handbook or DMG for D&D. There are supplements, but nothing core. You would not know that they recently released a new version.

I do think it’s funny that Steven Universe goes out of its way to establish it’s an alternate world in every way except video games. The same show that has Steven specifically point that there are only 39 states also gives him a GameCube and a Cloud Strife action figure.

While with hindsight, it’s obvious that Quibi was a video platform with no audience and a complete misunderstanding of short form content, it’s important for folks to know that, at the time… it was just as obvious that it had no audience and a complete misunderstanding of short form content.

Diablo III is a great example of why difficulty in games is more complicated than just, “Let the user decide.” It simply has too many difficulty modes. Doing well doesn’t make me feel proud and doing poorly doesn’t make me want to get better. Instead I go, “Oh I guess I’m on the wrong mode.”

Tech companies are hilarious. “Tired of timeshares? Well enjoy this revolutionary service where you buy *shares* of a property that grant you *time* on it!”
LinkedIn post:

Would you pay full price for a house you use 6 weeks a year?

Most people do. It’s just accepted as “how second homes work”: huge capital outlay, sitting empty most of the year, and someone still has to manage it

VIBLA is one of the fastest-growing companies in Europe’s real estate space right now, and the reason is simple: they broke that model

You own a real, seeded share of a fully-furnished home
You show up, you enjoy it, everything else is handled

No timeshare gimmicks
No shared-ownership horror stories
Just smarter math on an asset most people were overpaying for

This is what happens when someone finally questions an industry default nobody had touched in decades

Who’s in ?Overview

✔️ VIVLA redefines second homeownership by helping people buy, own, and sell fractions of the second home that better fits their life.
✔️ We sell unique second homes through an optimized legal and tax structure of multiple shares.
✔️ Each owner can buy one to four shares, with 6 weeks of vacation time per share.
✔️ All the advantages of owning a home with none of the pains

I should make the effort and catch the new Spider-Man in theaters, but I’m still burned after everyone hyped up NWH so much that I bought it on digital to watch it as soon as possible and it ended up being complete shit. (I’m sure the theater experience was electrifying, but at home, it sucked)

Random thoughts after picking up Diablo III again: 1) Wow this game is just, like, instantly fun. 2) I get why folks like the Adventure mode but the narrative structure of the story mode is important to not making me feel like I’m playing “Grind: the Game.” 3) Obsidian should make a PoE ARPG.

Finally made it out to the theater to see The Odyssey. I was actually surprised by how I don’t really have that many strong feelings on it. My biggest takeaway was that it was quite a loud film. At some parts, I was like, “Man I could use some of that wax myself.”

Reading the new Masks 2e quickstart reminded me of a big pet peeve I have: saying "do whatever makes according to the fiction" when explaining non-diegetic mechanics. The mechanics inform the fiction. If we knew what made sense according to the fiction without them, we wouldn't need to use them!

it would be helpful to mention japanese labor laws re: layoffs as a factor in these types of stories
Quiet Restructuring vs. U.S.-Style Layoffs

In Japan, U.S.-style sudden mass layoffs are rare by law and custom. Instead, firms practice a "quiet change". They curb hiring, redeploy staff internally, and expand early-retirement schemes. For example, Tokyo Shoko Research reports that 46 listed companies in FY2025 offered early retirement to over 20,000 workers. Notably, many announcements emphasized retraining and redeployment over firing. A consultant's study notes that Japanese companies are focusing on "eliminating redundant tasks" to boost productivity, rather than simply cutting headcount. What, if any, additional considerations apply if large numbers of dismissals (redundancies) are planned? How many employees need to be affected for the additional considerations to apply?
-

In cases of layoffs, courts tend to determine the validity of the dismissal by comprehensively considering the specific circumstances related to the following four elements (Tokyo District Court Decision, January 21, 2000; Osaka High Court Judgment, March 24, 2016, etc.).Since restructuring dismissals are dismissals based on the employer’s circumstances, stricter standards are applied in determining their validity than for dismissals attributable to the employee’s fault. These standards apply regardless of the number of employees targeted for dismissal.

(i) Necessity of Personnel Reduction: The implementation of personnel reduction must be based on sufficient necessity arising from corporate management issues such as recession, decline, or poor business performance, or be recognised as an unavoidable measure.

(ii) Efforts to Avoid Dismissal (Necessity of Selecting Layoffs as a Means of Workforce Reduction) : Measures to avoid layoffs must have been implemented, such as reducing expenses (including cutting overtime pay by stopping overtime work), reducing temporary workers, reducing or eliminating executive compensation and employee bonuses, not renewing fixed-term contracts, halting new hires, suspending pay raises, reassigning employees, or offering voluntary retirement programs.

(iii) Rationality of Selection: Objective and reasonable criteria must be established for selecting employees subject to dismissal, and these criteria must be applied fairly.

(iv) Fairness of the termination process: Conducting labour-management negotiations, individual interviews, and other procedures to provide explanations, disclose information, and engage in consultation with workers.

Steven Universe’s finale gets a lot of discourse, but for real, it holds up upon inspection and deconstruction so much better than, say, Avatar: the Last Airbender. Like how come no one ever talks about how the Fire Empire just kind of gave up because their leader couldn’t make fireballs?

Even though I didn’t stick with it, I’m glad I made an effort to get into Dragon Ball FighterZ earlier this year. Because I learned enough to be able to pick up Arcade mode and still have fun, and I learned enough to understand that the reasons people get into competitive fighters aren’t for me.

Maybe I should replay Super Metroid. Maybe I’ll get the hype this time. I beat it and enjoyed it but, overall, it was just, like, fine to me. Didn’t love the bosses but enjoyed the exploration, and I get why it was huge at the time. But I’m not sure it holds up against modern Metroidvanias.

It’s an extremely good bit to show a badass soldier going through a badass training montage and being loaded with badass equipment before going into battle and immediately becoming mulch. I’m not sure that makes me want to actually play the game, but I did get a good chuckle out of it.

You know how, in Final Fantasy, sometimes healing magic and items have the opposite effect on undead, so you can use Cure spells to hurt them and Phoenix Downs to instantly kill them? Things like that make me feel like there’s a lot of potential for an imsim turn-based RPG.

A bit from TFA that JJ Abrams doesn’t get enough shit for is that Jakku can’t both be riddled with the remains of ships from huge interplanetary conflicts and also in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. You have to pick one. Like if this place is so insignificant, what were they fighting over? Sand?

Yall I cannot take “yellow paint” criticism when your examples of games that don’t use it includes Mirror’s Edge. Like what’s the problem with “yellow paint” design? Is it that it blatantly guides you throughout the world in a heavy-handed way, or is the problem that the paint is yellow?

People get confused about the trans sports thing because at a glance it seems like a small issue that impacts a very small number of people and thus makes sense as a "reasonable" concession. But it isn't, because conceding that is accepting that a kid's trans identity is on some level fraudulent

Man I really love the design concept of fruitful voids except how people describe it as, “Oh we didn’t add a mechanic for x and therefore our game is about x.” That’s not what it means! Voids have to be constructed and maintained with intentional design and mechanics.

I really wish Nintendo would let developers actually talk about making their games. Is the new OoT remake Rococo? Idk, maybe! Would be nice if we could hear from the artists. The one time they let devs talk about BOTW, they then tried to scrub it from the internet. m.youtube.com/watch?v=CZzc...

I understand the desire for Zelda games in the “classic” dungeon style. But also I look at Skyward Sword, a game that twisted, turned, and remixed the dungeon format as hard as it could go only to be seen as “more of the same,” and I understand why the developers went, “Fine, we’ll change it.”
