Yeah, the ability of the two party primary to act as a lens that immediately magnified MAGA from a 15% party to a 50+1% party has been Not Great. I think the European experience shows the Racism Party can still grind it out, so it's not a perfect firewall, but you can't get one-shot like 2016

I guess an actual advantage of breaking up the two party system would be to potentially give sane conservatives a place to go other than the personality cult for the senile narcissist.

Ironically one way to square this a little would be to send Senate elections back to state legislatures that are elected in multiparty elections

It does not, the House can be made PR with a single federal bill. The only thing IIRC that Article 1 specifies is the voter qualification, itself something that's been modified with subsequent amendments. Senate is a different matter of course; you can't meaningfully do PR with just two seats

remember: it saved no net money, social services US citizens are getting cut, and left the US in a weaker place geopolitically. none of the debates about fiscal responsibility, obligation to US citizens first, or 'hard choices' actually apply. they're all bullshit. killed people for nothing at all.

I think the fact that fully subsidized/publicly owned/social/low-income housing would be less necessary and smaller in scope is seen as a bug, not a feature, by left-NIMBYs. They *want* the problem to be solved by as large of a program as possible. But it's all angels on the head of a pin for them

It's not just practically free, it's revenue-positive for governments and would create a lot more surplus value for everyone. It'd make it cheaper and easier to fund social programs. In the narrow context of housing, it'd decrease the need for and increase our ability to provide social housing

thing is, if you lack the spirit, the logistics won’t save you (which is why there are times you can just drive down a highway™️), but spirit plateaus pretty sharply and we’ve gotten pretty good at getting guys willing to charge trenches. The challenge is more not getting them slaughtered.

fundamentally, the question comes down "is war about spirit or is it about logistics?" (if you think it's entirely about the former, you're going to get your shit rocked)

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.

So that critique is really an unfair jab at 'pulpy' genres, but pulp genres regularly produce surprising great art precisely because they're open to experimentation. That said, I think there is a real divide here between what we might call 'expressive art' and 'functional art.'
