“Is it not wiser to pay less attention to what the enemy can do, and pay more attention to what he will do?” That the US *could* defeat Israel does not mean that this would have been a credible threat.

anyone remember that time Blücher got so drunk and depressed he thought he was pregnant with an elephant? and the whole Prussian army was still like "yeah he's still the guy we need to beat napoleon" (they were right)

I don't believe that every trans person in America should immediately be made aware of every single evil bill introduced by some podunk state rep in a random red state they don't live in I don't think that's healthy. I have always needed to see a likelihood of advancement before I would write it up

Nothing really prepared me for the whiplash that came from Israel/Palestine transforming from famous shorthand for “an extraordinarily complicated mess with no good outcomes” to something “so simple, you’re an evil moron if you disagree with me.” It literally happened in the discourse overnight.

i had to cut it for length, but the main argument against "we need wealth taxes to lower wealth inequality" is that there's no historical evidence of wealth taxes lowering wealth inequality to any meaningful degree at any point in time anywhere in the world it's just kind of begging the question

One thing that’s been striking to me as an Elder Millennial is how certain narratives about the economy got frozen in amber at the end of the Bush administration, and never really got updated again. Wages are flat, millions of uninsured, sometimes you even hear about preexisting conditions!

if you want to be the party of government, you have to be the party of good government. this is another way of saying details matter. if you want to attack inequality, you need to make sure it *works.* and it turns out the design of tax systems matters quite a lot.

Sucks, but there are way more people who pine to do creative work than society has use for. And there is a shortage of people who pine to do shitty infrastructure work. Having a partially open market allows the creation of incentives and disincentives necessary to solve this supply/demand issue.

It's good that we invented things like
"government" and "the economy" but we can't meaningfully participate in them if the people in charge are constantly rubbing in our faces that these things are fake, and in fact you are a naive doofus if you think otherwise. That's a society on life support

It's kind of maddening to see almost no one with power and a major platform publicly wrestling with this. We're gonna have to talk about something other than gas and grocery prices at some point 3/3

So-called “inclusionary zoning,” the practice of requiring home builders to rent new apartments at a loss to low-income tenants, is a tax on new housing that worsens the housing shortage and raises rents overall in exchange for a handful of means-tested units. It’s bad policy!

If you say "The economy is far better than 2008" people do not parse that as an objective claim to be assessed. They see it as you announcing your support for the powers-that-be -- some unholy amalgamation of centrist Democrats and now, the Trump administration as well.

I don't understand the need to say dickwad CEOs can't make good stuff. This is the world we live in. A lot of my favorite things in the arts and sciences come from absolute bastards. The real argument should be about how to channel dickwaddery into good social outcomes, not whether the stuff works.

Sure, go ahead, post about a relatively important distinction that matters, I say to myself. People can handle it without being too weird, I reassure myself.
Me: think we need to differentiate between "Al uses a lot of water!" (not necessarily bad on its own) and "Al stresses local water supplies" (a potentially real issue). The distinction is important because even "modest" use can cause serious issues, especially given the locations of data centers

Tweet from @serene_ necrosis (the Irish American lady who wears a secular hijab-inspired accessory and told the Massachusetts covid conscious lesbian bar that she hoped someone firebombed them for making masks optional one night a week)

Nurses are to disabled people what cops are to black people, and if you're black and disabled at the same time, you're basically screwed, and according to disability scholars racism is socially disabling, so there's no such thing as a non-disabled black person.

The thing is that a narrative doesn’t have to be entirely true to be useful—you can say a whole lot about “how we live together” without forgoing prosecutions. You very much want people (even people who don’t deserve it) to be able to tell themselves what they need to to defect.
