we are going to have to find an alternative to meta products for local communities and advertising, right now, it’s almost impossible to do any kind of local business or art project without it, but both their rules and support are so arbitrary and capricious that you can’t rely on them

People keep analogizing rent control to the minimum wage, suggesting that maybe empirical work will refute the theoretical work. But the empirical work is generally showing what theory would predict.

Solar+storage looks relatively bad here because batteries are energy-intensive to produce and their energy inputs aren't yet decarbonized. As we decarbonize further they'll look better, and once we've got electrified mining equipment and factories powered by solar they'll be a lot closer to zero

one of the things that people who use these things regularly will tell you is that as far as the actual current proved out revenue-producing uses (programming, mostly, although not entirely) the models seem to be sorta asymptoted, which is part of why there's now such fierce price competition

Society needs to crack down on this *somewhere*. If you're not going to punish the parents for abusing their children with their crank ideas, you'd better crack down on the businesses profiting from the crank ideas. If we don't, society has decided parents poisoning their kids for fun is OK

Chris Rufo's attempted crusade against Indian-Americans paired with his Thai immigrant wife and three Asian-American children is some combination of stupid, naive, cynical, and abusive. He either thinks it won't actually work or it'll stop before it gets to his family

I am sort of constantly baffled by critics (which I am, more than not!) who don't feel like they have to stay apprised of what these things can actually do. not least you're going to come off like a fool, but also it's not at all like knowing what they can do obviates the criticisms of them?

Anthropogenic carbon emissions are likely to drop precipitously in our lifetimes, and I think we'll try various forms of cheap geoengineering to make up for the carbon we've emitted so far and we'll probably succeed at blunting the worst effects of climate change

LLMs are both incredibly bad for pedagogy (strong incentive for students to just rely on them) and incredibly good for pedagogy (I just had an LLM write a bunch exercises for the person I mentoring in Haskell and verify the correct answers typecheck)

It's basically also Israel's regional strategy, right? They don't want there to be functional states, really, because functional states would have the ability to counterbalance them? Of course you also can't make peace with a failed state, but hey

The actual wholesale panel cost is, to first approximation, immaterial to the total cost of small-scale rooftop solar in the US. I'd wager factors like how far the workers have to commute matters more at this point
