In case you’re wondering, there is no prohibition on indicting a federal judge & sending him to prison, but he receives a salary and his seat judgeship remains occupied until impeached & removed

When they say local rule they don't mean state rule, they mean municipal & county. I think you can tell the difference. It's a sorry principle that appeals to federalism when Republicans want to disempower government & appeals to democracy when they don't.

Man, no matter how much you tell students, "you cannot guess later Latin principle parts for verbs from earlier ones" there are always a few who try in every class. And it turns out - wait for it - you cannot guess later Latin principle parts for verbs from earlier ones.

People will be like "why didn't they do more sooner" when actually it's "the predictions were so dire that they were able to get a surprising degree of action at a time when hardly anyone in a serious decision-making position actually took the topic as seriously as it deserved, if they cared at all"

Yeah...the worst case scenarios were based on low innovation/economic growth, high population growth, an energy mix which was largely based on brown coal, and no scalable mitigation until the end of century.

Another reason why the current wave of Left antisemitism hurts so much is that we just spent the past 20 yrs with DEI, antiracism, intersectionality, microaggressions, minority/indigenous/immigrant rights, etc. except now we see that NONE of that applies when it comes to the rights of Jews.

look. unless youre willing to systematically and thoroughly drive antisemites out of the organizations, a process which would be long, painful, and result in the effective paralysis of left organizations for years, then youre just going to have to tolerate this.

(and that is what so many college students seem to have lost track of: the part where college is the most elite and expensive brain gym ever invented, and somehow now they think that watching videos of bench presses is the same as doing bench presses)

anyways it turns out that you have to have that inner discipline of self to keep your brain going to the brain gym that's the important part

for me two absolutely core aspects of intellectual discipline are reading and writing. no, not reading posts and writing posts: logging your ass off, reading a book, thinking hard about it, and then writing something else long-form in response. not a hot take: a genuine response.

maintaining that inner sense of true and false is as much an emotional task and a social task as an intellectual one.

one thing i have long thought, in this business of Takes, is that there is an enormous necessity to discipline your own thinking. it is *so easy* to get lazy. to just talk shit. to just outsource your brain to your own comments section.

i'm actually going to take this goofy post somewhat seriously: much as going to the gym requires discipline, so too does going to the mental gym require discipline. and discipline is harder than it looks: it is about *your* ability to discipline *yourself*

I think, assuming we don’t just eliminate ICE/CBP entirely and reconstitute border checks under a separate agency or agencies, I think any shirking can be handled by massive RIFs and a public campaign of “they let the bad guys walk free because we wouldn’t let them shoot the tamale lady in the face”

Progressives should be content with deploying national guard troops to the border to replace ICE/CBP temporarily until a broader solution can be enacted. Fire them all day 1 and deploy some troops to prevent chaos on the border. Then come up with a plan to divvy those agency powers up correctly.

SC because not trying to pile on, but Chesa was (in part, not monocausal, etc) successfully recalled by SFPD sandbagging. I personally know people in the city told by on duty cops “sorry can’t arrest this obviously dangerous person threatening you, due to the DA”. Like, it worked.

In general I think shirking is a hugely effective tool in the cops political arsenal and whole progressive elected officials have a workable toolkit for punishing affirmative abuses (abuse of force, etc), there’s less of one for negative abuses (refusing to do the legitimate parts of the job)

I’m pretty worried about ICE/CBP going blue-flu to ratfuck the next Dem administration tbh. I don’t really think there’s a good counter to them doing malicious compliance and stopping even normal enforcement, then going “sorry, we had to let that child predator go, due to woke” to sympathetic media

We've shot the moon on this and have now defined collapse away from "any second now" to "collapse isn't real", when I'm pretty sure the vast majority of Cubans and Iranians would agree that their economies have collapsed.

Downside: The US now has government goon squads, and deploys them to try to intimidate voters into voting the way the president wants. Upside: They don’t have nearly enough goons. Not even close. They’re hoping fear will make up for that big shortfall, but it won’t.

For most people, the first time they become aware of how bad a problem is is when somebody attempts to start tracking it, which they then interpret as the cause of the problem. To them, the cover-up is preferable to unveiling the crime, so long as the crime doesn't affect them directly.

A lot of the work in Soviet and pre-Soviet times was pretty generic anti-plague research (vaccination, treatment, etc) but they still hid it. It's eminently believable a natural strain infected a lab tech and the FSB immediately covered it up because Russia covers up everything about plague.

This actually dates back to before the Soviet Union existed. The USSR had the second-largest enzootic plague area in the world but denied any cases. Infectious disease outbreaks were just generally state secrets. Russia hiding plague information is nothing new. It's infuriating, but not new.
