It's Nobel Prize week! Time for your annual reminder that 72 years after Alfred Nobel died, economists got Swedish bankers to endow an econ prize "in honor of Alfred Nobel," against Nobel's descendants' wishes. Media now pretend the econ prize is as newsworthy as the phys/chem/med/lit/peace prizes.

I am the publisher of Public, which reaches 2 million people across all platforms, and I am writing about next week's #Disinfo2026 conference in Vilnius.
The programme lists you as a speaker in "Trust and safety through decentralised platforms" on October 8. The description reads: "This panel explores the operational realities of deploying automated defense tools across decentralised spaces."
The conference's sponsors page lists the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Global Affairs Canada as "main supporters," and the European External Action Service under "with the support of."
The same programme includes a session titled "USA as a FIMI threat: acknowledge, adapt, push back," whose description asks "how did the United States become a FIMI threat for Europe?" It also includes a workshop run by Ghost Shift in which participants
"draw on an operational toolkit (coveringFirst, what do you intend the session to achieve, and what actions will you ask governments, regulators or platforms to take?
Second, is any government, or any organization that receives government money, paying a fee or expenses for your appearance? Which governments, if any, fund your work or your organization's?
Third, have you, or any organization you work with, asked a platform or a regulator to remove, label, demonetize or restrict online content or accounts? If so, which content, and when?
Fourth, do you regard the US government as a source of foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI) in Europe? Have you had any contact with the State Department or another US agency about your work or this conference?
Fifth, do you, or any organization you work with, operate or advise on online accounts or personas that do not disclose who runs them?
I would be glad to talk by phone at 415-710-1042.
Please reply by 5 pm Eastern on Monday, October 5.

No country *needs* to dominate its neighbours. No country should get to demand respect it hasn’t earned. No country should be allowed to attack to satisfy its desires. For far too long, the West has been coddling Ru. That's why we're here.

Former MI6 chief Scarlett said that the West didnt grasp how much Ru needed to be respected and treated as a great power equal to the US. I’d say the West actually understood and nearly embraced that idea. This was a huge mistake, actually. The West shouldn’t have construed Ru's desires as needs!

brings me no joy to say that Fukuyama nailed it
But supposing that the world has become "filled up," so to speak, with liberal democracies, such that there exist no tyranny and oppression worthy of the name against which to struggle?
Experience suggests that if men cannot struggle on behalf of a just cause because that just cause was victorious in an earlier gen-eration, then they will struggle against the just cause. They will struggle for the sake of struggle. They will struggle, in other words, out of a certain boredom: for they cannot imagine living in a world without struggle. And if the greater part of the world in which they live is characterized by peaceful and prosperous liberal democracy, then they will struggle against that peace and pros-perity, and against democracy.

SocArXiv now has a limit of two papers per week. If authors submit more than that we assume they are LLM-generated and reject them all. Normal humans who need to upload a batch of papers, which sometimes happens, must make arrangements. Also today, ArXiv set a two papers per month limit.

Canada should be investing in electrification and clean power, not another oil pipeline. The Pacific Link pipeline will increase emissions and is a risky bet for public funds, as long-term oil demand weakens. It should not be designated as a project of national interest. 🔗 buff.ly/BbuAlfq
