She also really debunks the common justifications about religion, region, and age. Your grandparents and parents have shitty values because they have shitty values, not because of anything else. They could do better. Anyone can use their eyes to see the world and have the correct read.

The Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929, which froze the House of Representatives at 435, using the 1910 census because of racism, sexism, and hatred of cities (which eclipsed rural areas for the first time in US history in the 1920 census). I must see it dead before its hundredth birthday.

The purpose of studying anything isn't the subject itself but to learn how to *think* like an expert about it. People outsourcing their thinking to genAI are not learning how to think, at all. Part of the cognitive atrophy that genAI immediately induces is no longer being able to understand this

It is Rachel Robinson’s 104th birthday. She is an accomplished nurse, decorated professor & is probably most recognizable as the wife of Jackie Robinson. They married before he integrated baseball. She’s a civil rights hero who was there the whole way as a stalwart in global resistance to oppression

Rabbi Yirmeya raises a dilemma: If one leg of the chick was within fifty cubits of the dovecote, and one leg was beyond fifty cubits, what is the halakha? The Gemara comments: And it was for his question about this far-fetched scenario that they removed Rabbi Yirmeya from the study hall, as he was apparently wasting the Sages’ time.

For your convenience, the Pride and Prejudice live-posting super-thread 📚
A drawing of Elizabeth Bennet, a lovely young woman with her long hair tied up nearly under a ribbon and wearing what is most likely a neo-classically inspired dress, looking pensive, two letters in her hand. Meanwhile Darcy, a handsome but stern-looking fellow, looks longingly at her. Also there is me, a little gremlin in big round glasses, skulking about in the background and hoping that they kiss.

The accompanying text reads “Trung reads Pride and Prejudice for the first time, somehow.”

When some people's existence is political, their very choice to include them becomes a political issue. When politics enters the narrative, the narrative is corrupted. Serkis' comments make sense if you understand that whiteness views inclusion as a political issue which has no place in narrative.

Tolkien was an academic and while limited by what would've been really biased history at the time, not a guy who lived in a tiny house in the middle of nowhere. And our biases of that history factors in, too. Way too many people today think the UK was always white and it never was.

And so we reach the end: “To be as full of mitzvot as a pomegranate is to look at our world and say, No, it does not stay as it is, No, the future is not yet written, Yes, we can repair the world, Yes, I will be there for you and for the children of our children's children's children.“ 5/6
On the left reads “To be as full of mitzvot as a pomegranate is to look at our world and say, No, it does not stay as it is, No, the future is not yet written, Yes, we can repair the world, Yes, I will be there for you and for the children of our children's children's children. We will be as many as the seeds of a pomegranate and we will build this new world one step at a time, one breath at a time, one act building on another until the seeds we plant today grow into orchards of pomegranates and mitzvot. I will die, we all will die, but we will also live on in this work. That is the eternity we are promised.
This is my new year's wish for you, my friends.
May you find a way to take that step, may you find your community, may you become the blessing that we need in this world.”
